      Well, it does make a difference. Firstly, because it’s almost impossible for any regular citizen of NYC to get a full conceal carry permit, so no other citizen would be able to legally defend themselves with a firearm in this situation. Also, any regular citizen would be obligated to attempt to retreat before resorting to deadly force because NY doesn't have stand your ground laws.

    Never, ever leave the fucking car during a road rage incident. Just withdraw from the situation asap, call it in and move on. It’s not worth your life over a perceived traffic infraction.

      I think about that every time somebody cuts me off on the road. You don’t know what unhinged person is sitting in that car next to you. Flipping somebody off or starting some shit...just not worth it in the long run. And I live in LA, anyway. If I was pissed off every time some shit went down in traffic I’d have had an aneurysm by now.

      My dad had really bad road rage when I was younger, it was almost like he couldn’t control himself. I feel like I’ve used that as my model for the exact opposite way to respond.

    Why did you have the window down? Also, why not just drive away? Also, brandishing a weapon is generally enough to back someone off. I’m not defending this asshole who was trying to assault that cop, but why did the cop escalate it that far?

    I don’t know about killing, but these half-children who have the gall to get out of their cars, approach other people’s cars in the middle of traffic and start arguing/fighting with them deserve to get shot at least once.

    And you better fucking believe I’d shoot someone in self defense too if they did that to me. If you’re mad at someone while driving, do what every other sensible person does and curse them out to yourself with the windows rolled up.

    According to a witness and a state assemblyman who spoke with Dempsey’s family, Dempsey may have been angered because Isaacs cut him off while driving.

    I got shit for saying it the last time something like this happened, but I’m going to say it again anyway. Just stay in your fucking car and let it go. Stay in the car with your girlfriend, child, & niece, keep them safe, and live to see another day. Road rage is a fucking disease.

    I don’t have a further opinion on the particulars of this situation, though it sounds like I’ll be TeamNoOne once the dust settles.

      Off-duty cops carrying around their service weapon, why?

      I’m now thinking back to another road rage incident with the officer who pulled on a group of cyclists.

      Cops will make the argument that as officers they are targets, on and off duty, but I haven’t seen that substantiated with data.

        The argument that I’ve more commonly seen made is that even when officers are technically “off-duty” in the sense that they don’t take calls or investigate crimes while off the clock, they are still expected to intervene to prevent crimes, apprehend suspects on the spot, etc. if they encounter such things.
