This seems like a crime of petty spite more than anything. It’s not like the thief will be able to sell the coin anywhere... did he just want to beat up and rob someone who was kind of well-known in the area?

Petty? Somebody decided to rob and beat a 93 year old woman who happens to be a beloved representative of that area. There’s nothing petty about that.

You would be surprised. I have had two former teachers in their upper 80's get BEATEN and robbed. I really do understand the need to beat a person of this advanced age just to rob them. There has to be some real anger/evil in it.

She’s already eager to go back to work this week. Supremely badass woman.

“I don’t want to face the public as a victim. I’m a survivor,” she said with the calm, reasoned tone that has made her interpretive tours for the national park popular with visitors. “People need to know I’m all right, and you can send that message.”

She sounds incredible. I find her especially badass and inspiring since I wanted to be a park ranger when I was a little girl. I’ve gone a different way, but if Betty could start when she was 85 and now in her 90s experience such a shitty thing and be ready to get back to work anyway... goddamn, Betty’s my new hero.

Didn’t this happen about a week ago and not July 4th? Or have I come unstuck in time?

Anyway, this is just awful and I hope for her quick recovery.

It did happen a week ago; seems Rachel missed the June 30th date on the LATimes story.

And yes this is absolutely awful. What kind of monster punches and robs an old lady??? Jesus.

Holy crap, this makes me so angry. I remember hearing about her last year and just being impressed by her. I just don’t have words and again, I’m going to site to give what I can because we live in a world full of violently, disrespectful assholes.

Thanks for the link, Rachel and Happy ‘Murika day. I hope you get quadruple time for babysitting us today.

Edit: The donation site’s super slow-well, the paypal part of it. I can’t tell if my paltry donation went through. I’ll double check later. I hope that the site’s slow because of a huge amount of traffic.

For all the talk of rehabilitation as the sole legitimate goal of a criminal justice system, this was a crime committed by monsters.

There is no need so great as to justify dragging a 94 year old woman out of her bed and punching her in the face. There is no coming back from this. And our prisons are full of people who have done things like this.

Actually our prisons are full up of people who use and sell small quantities of pot. There’s no room for violent assholes like this.

I’m disgusted BUT really happy that this garbagemonster didn’t kill her. I also like the part where she hides in the bathroom with an iron that she plugs in. Awesome thinking. I only wish she could stick it in that asshole’s face Home Alone style.

This one is personal. My production company interviewed her for a piece we did, on her experiences working on the shipyards in an “auxiliary local” which was a segregated part of the labor union. Recently the president of that union formally apologized to her at a ceremony which was truly powerful and cathartic for all concerned.

She’s a wonderful woman and we were all appalled at the office when we heard this had happened to her.

When this jackass gets caught and convicted in addition to whatever richly deserved prison sentence he gets, they should also tack on that anyone who ever meets him gets one free shot to boot.
