I want to put a smiley face sign in my window that indicates me as a emergency, respite child care mom. You? Go take a shower by yourself. Walk through a quiet library. Me? I’ll feed your kid muffins and have them run in the back yard until they are too tired to sass.

So she’s 29 and had five children aged 7 and under? I wonder if this will turn out to be something similar to the Andrea Yates killings.

As a person who suffered from postpartum depression stories like this always bring up a lot of feelings. Of course I know there's a chance this wasn't it but the reaction to these stories always reminds me of the fear I had to speak up about my illness.

It’s hard. Really fucking hard. I had PPD with my oldest and there’s so much shame associated. Now I have two kids and its fucking draining and exhausting. All give, all the time. And confessing that you’re not enjoying it or that you desperately need help is often met with extreme judgement or trite comments like “you enjoy these days! They go so fast.” No they don't.

This is terrible. Those poor babies. And the father and 7 year old who got away? This is going to be just horrible for them.

I could also never be a police officer. The idea of having to walk into a scene like that. It’s just.... horrifying.

My father is a retired police officer. The first time my mom ever saw my dad cry was 13 years into their marriage. He was the first officer on the scene of a murder-suicide; a father killed his 2yo daughter and then himself. My dad came home that day and she found him in their bedroom crying.

My heart goes out to this father and the 7yo and also the officers who had to deal with the scene and check the non-existent pulses.

prayers because at this point in time this community needs exactly that, we need prayer

I understand that some people do feel comforted by prayer, but what your community needs is access to free mental health care, free child care, and free family planning services.

Jesus, to be a cop, get that call and arrive on that scene. Say what you want about cops but the things they must see while on the job....

A patient of mine this week was a mortician. We were talking about her job (she came in for after a workplace accident), and I was saying that after doing a study day years ago in a funeral home I was really attracted to the job. She said she loves it, but still any time a kid comes in it’s just so upsetting. Even after years in the job, each time is as upsetting as the first. On the upside, of all the people I’ve spoken to who work in the industry, they are all lovely and caring and treat the deceased with as much or more respect than they were treated with when they were alive. It’s somewhat comforting, even though when you’re in there hands you won’t be aware of it.

Some of them see horrible things. The big majority of them mostly answer domestic violence and mental breakdown calls which are tough but for which they desperately need training.

I agree in a general sense, but many who make your comment have too much optimism about what mental health care can do. Medications, therapy — they all have an astounding failure rate. We need so much more basic research. Our knowledge about how to improve mental health is truly abysmal.

I’m a postpartum doula, and I specifically work with women who suffer from PPD, as well as postpartum psychosis. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this falls into that category.

Of the women who develop a postpartum psychosis, research has suggested that there is approximately a 5% suicide rate and a 4% infanticide rate associated with the illness. This is because the woman experiencing psychosis is experiencing a break from reality. In her psychotic state, the delusions and beliefs make sense to her; they feel very real to her and are often religious. Immediate treatment for a woman going through psychosis is imperative.

I was saddened to hear the officer speaking of the woman as if she did this intentionally, when statistics say it’s not like that per se. Oftentimes these women don’t have the proper mental health resources, they suffer immense guilt from feeling overwhelmed as a mother, their hormones aren’t balanced due to a string of pregnancies, and the slope into PPD from simple postpartum anxiety is so slippery and so fast, and usually not diagnosed until it’s fully flourished inside of that mother. These symptoms can be accelerated if the mother has undiagnosed Bipolar disorder or other dormant mental health conditions

What she did was unimaginable, and she will have to live with that for the rest of her life, as she begins to process what happened in a real way. That's hell on earth if I ever heard of it, because oftentimes these mothers really do love their children.

It’s just sad all around. So very fucking sad.

Thanks for posting. People need to know how important it is to support postpartum women and families, because it's such a fragile time and hard for people outside of immediate family and community to identify and treat PPD.

      In her psychotic state, the delusions and beliefs make sense to her;

this is something people forget too often - cases like these, the person usually is not thinking logically/rationally.

As far as delusions being religious - could you explain that a little more? like “god told me to kill my baby”?

This is too overwhelming. I don’t know how the father and surviving child cope with this, but I hope they somehow find a way.
