I love how “international” means “white lead”

I feel like if i’m upset about this, then I have to be upset about Johnny Storm being played by a black actor in the new fantastic 4. I’m still on the fence about that, just like I am this. If the movies good, and Johansen does a good job, i’m open.

If you believe the two situations are interchangeable, then you don’t understand the importance of increased representation for people of colour (POC) in media with roles that are not ridiculous caricatures of actual POC. When is the last time an Asian actor was the lead in a movie?

That’s kind of a false equivalency. Maybe if Asian actresses were actually represented properly in the film industry, Johansson’s casting wouldn’t be such a big deal. But they aren’t represented properly. Whereas black people, while generally more represented in the film industry than other races/ethnicities, still aren’t cast in big budget movies nearly as much as white people are.

Equating the two implies that black people are represented as well as white people are in the film industry, and they just aren’t.

Clearly White people are more globally representative than anyone else. That’s weird since Asia and Africa are the two most populous continents in the world, but whatevs.

edited because neither Africa nor Asia are countries.

Paul referred to the setting of Ghost in the Shell as “an international world.”

I wanted something other than word salad for lunch today, Paul.

And I’m firmly in the “just fucking say it’s because of money and starpower” camp.

It really frustrates me that 99/100 times in interviews like this, people aren’t challenged on their bullshit.

Yes! The same thing for me and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One. Just say “WE REALLY WANTED TILDA AND SHE IS MAGICAL AND MYSTICAL SO THIS IS THE CHARACTER WE GOT HER FOR.” “SCARLET IS A PROVEN ACTION HERO AND SO WE WANTED HER AS THE LEAD TO OUR ACTION MOVIE”

“Paul also clarified the name of Johansson’s character: She is referred to as “the Major” in the movie, despite being known as Major Kusanagi in the source material.”

You know you're authentic when you have to burn the evidence that says otherwise!

To be fair, between the 9 million articles on this posted by io9 and Kotaku the consensus seems to be that the main character was never depicted as physically ethnic Japanese and she is walking around in a surrogate body anyways. Dropping Kusanagi is probably just to avoid confusion for the non nerdy people.

Would these types of movies benefit from honestly stating, “Hey, we cast Scarlett Johansson as the lead because she’s a major recognizable movie star who can make us money”?

And they will know the truth, and the truth will set them free...

Iff they did just straight-out Americanize the character and movie, then I’m more okay with it. In that case it’s more like Magnificent Seven being a remade version of Seven Samurai (or the reverse, when Unforgiven was remade as a Japanese samurai film set in the early Meiji Period). I was afraid they were going to treat her as a Japanese character despite obviously not being Japanese.

That too. Ridley Scott straight-up said that was the reason why he cast white actors as ancient Egyptians/Hebrews in his Exodus movie - he just wouldn’t get funding for it if he cast unknown Arabic actors (which in of itself wouldn’t be accurate, because the New Kingdom had been swept over by multiple migrations and invasions and there’s evidence from his mummy that Rameses II was pale with red hair).

To be fair the Major has a fully prosthetic body so they could have hand waved the race if they had actually wanted to. Though that would go against the source material where she is expressly still Japanese.

Also the whole CG to make Johanson look Asian is hindering his arguments.

It is an international story — from the Japanese perspective. Public Security Section 9 isn’t Overwatch, FFS.

It’s interesting that he keeps referring back to the manga — which part of the manga does he mean? Is he trying to distance himself from Stand Alone Complex anime?
