This Party of One section on the gay social scene I also found to be incredibly wise:

I have a theory. I think everybody needs to join a club at some point in his or her life. People have a natural hunger to be on the inside, and the later they satisfy that hunger, the more of a nightmare person they turn into. Take fraternities and sororities: a person who has fit in somewhere before having joined a fraternity tends to put the experience in its proper place, while a person for whom it’s their first club tends to take it way too seriously. Similarly, if a person gets through college without ever having been on the inside, and then moves to a big city and is immediately accepted into the gay community, he has a tendency to be the worst. He learns the rules and the lingo and the dress code, and he is fucking vicious to the people who don’t know them. He has been denied membership in a club until very late in life, and someone is going to pay.

I’m not gay, at least I don’t think, but these interviews you have posted of late have really been helping me to wrap my head around my own kind of coming out—maybe best to call it a going away—and struggles with acceptance of being different. I just want to say that I appreciate them and the wisdom contained within.

A ST LOUIS FACT: this guy went to the same high school as all the Schlafly boys. (Kevin Kline went there as well, but that’s beside the point.) I considered going there, but you had to take Latin every year (which I didn’t want to do) and play a sport every season (which I was all in favor of...until they said that they didn’t consider the sport I was best at and had played since I was six, namely hockey, as counting for that requirement. Apparently that’s changed, but the damage was done.)

I went to Jesuit Catholic high school. We had to take Latin every year. Wasn’t bad. Helps with a lot of other stuff. You should have done it!

I ended up going to a Jesuit school and had the option of taking Latin, but ended up taking Spanish to AP level. Don’t get me wrong, Latin’s useful for other stuff, but I wanted to learn something that had other applications outside of academics. Like being able to tell my friends what exactly was going on when we all watched Sábado Gigante, for instance.

What makes a boner gay? I mean, aside from if some dude is sucking on it?

As a side note, Yanagihara’s A Little Life was one of the most engrossing, frustrating, and emotionally manipulative books I’ve read in recent history. I loved every page of it. I’m looking forward to this one as well.

In Party of One, pop culture references flow like that white-water river that Meryl Streep shot Kevin Bacon on over two decades ago. Holmes writes of his obsession with entertainment, especially music, that bloomed at an early age

Is this what makes it a “gay book”? Because I honestly can’t think of a more pedantic and shallow line of topics. Take a shot every time Barbara Streisand/Cher/Liza Minnelli gets mentioned. Yawn.

I really enjoy Dave on podcasts. He’s always entertaining and justseems like a really considerate guy, albeit one who has gotten way too much into Crossfit.

I’m excited for him that his book seems to be getting some good heat.

Timing on this is fantastic; thank you for sharing. Our 15-yr-old son came out to us about a year ago and even with our full support and attention, it has been a very isolating experience for him thus far. We can tell him what it’s like to be a teenager, but that’s about it. This might help.
