I’m always conflicted by shit like this and, like, white nursing students going to administer vaccines in Uganda over their spring break. On one hand, it’s nice to help people, especially when those people are poor and there’s clearly an unmet need for the service being provided. On the other hand, all the eye rolls.

Maybe you just used a bad example, but I don’t see anything wrong with that scenario.

I have no problem with people—white or otherwise—doing work like this. What I do hate (and something I saw a lot when I lived in Cape Town for 5 months) is when people take pictures with children and then post them on the internet. I only shared images of kids whose names I knew and who I actually developed relationships with.

I doubt she even knows their names. Take the pictures if you want (oftentimes the kids want to take pictures!) but flaunting them like that is gross. Plus, I rarely see people doing this when they visit France, Spain, Australia etc.

The most cringe worthy for me was the mirror one. They have fucking mirrors in Africa Debra. Jesus. Trust me that kid has seen his reflection before.

Okay please explain this shade to me. I am a white woman and have been to Ghana several times, I have a deep love for the culture and people, as well as the beautiful landscape. From my perspective, no Ghanaians have an issue or provide shade when I am there. Obviously I stick out like a sore thumb and am stared at and definitely pay a higher rate for lodging, food, knick knacks, etc but other than that there is no one rolling their eyes that a white person is there. It seems like Messing is enjoying her trip and trying to make the most out of, as well as doing good for the community. The community also seems to enjoy her presence. In MY experience, Ghanaians encourage you to embrace the culture such as jewelry, fabrics, etc. because it means you are spending money in their community. Idk, I realize writing this is going to get a lot of backlash but felt like I needed to type. I also really miss Ghana.

After looking more closely I see that she is definitely taking advantage of the photo opportunities. So I get some of the shade.

I can’t speak for everyone, but my eyes began rolling when she failed to attach a name to any of the people she is displaying.

I believe she means well, and is attempting to do good works, but unfortunately her photos use these people like props.

I don’t get where she says she isn’t in Kansas anymore. There’s a restaurant in Liberal, Kansas that serves alligator. I’ve found it to taste like chicken, only it’s a lot chewier.

Pretty sure she would have the same attitude visiting Kansas as she does in Africa. But has she really never eaten in a decent Cajun restaurant in the United States?

I’m white, blonde, and 5'7". When I was in Hong Kong, people took pictures with and of me nearly every day, as if I were an animal on display in a zoo. It was never in bad spirit, though. I was just something different than they were used to seeing.

What...Hong Kong is not a backwater. The British banker types all seem to be married to blond women and the sight of a white woman walking the streets of Hong Kong, or using the Metro or really doing anything is not at all unusual.

I’ve been told that a similar thing happens in Sweden if you’re not white, blonde, and tall.

I never did before, but I hate Debra Messing now. Why couldn’t she visit poor whites in Tennesee? They have sex workers there too. They probably have their own condom dance as well!

Probably because an NGO approached her and told her about all the good she can do. Because there are people who are going to donate because of her.

Messing is a special kind of clueless, but there is a structural piece about how the NGO industry works as well.

But couldn’t she just GO and not document it in this cringey self-referential way on Instagram? Helping people without an audience is still helping.

It’s also just kind of offensive to take a pic of another cultures food as an “ew gross” thing. Although I would often like to take pictures of bottles of mayo and Instagram as such.

On the other hand, I would like to know how she keeps her copious eyliner from running in summer in Malawi.

Malawi is in the Southern Hemisphere, so it'd be winter. Or as winter as Malawi gets.
