this is one of the most American articles I’ve ever read: an article exhorting you to purposefully choose a bread sans flavour. If that doesn’t sum up the average American culinary palate, than I don’t know what.

Don’t judge us all by the bland among us. Remember, not all Americans are pale people who came from Europe. Some of us like food with flavor and actually use seasonings.

On most counts, I agree with you. But plain white bread is the perfect choice for this sandwich because it serves the role of tofu. It takes on the flavor of the tomato, mayo, salt & pepper. You don’t need to compete with that perfection. You just need a vehicle.

Seriously. Some fresh mozarella or a creamy burrata would be really tasty with this. It’s mild enough that it doesn’t overpower the tomato.

What *kind* of cheese though? I go with American, which isn’t even really cheese. But some things can only be done with good old American cheese product.

And a cucumber sandwich, or combine them into the ultimate summer sandwich, the cucumber tomato sandwich. We’re going to have way too many tomatoes this year, I’m really excited!

More than we can reasonably eat and freeze. Canning is an awful activity I refuse to participate in during July and August.

My dear Kelly, you have not been specific enough in this otherwise lovely homage to my favorite food. You must use, and ONLY use, Duke’s mayonnaise in your tomato sandwiches.

This sandwich is a real nightmare for me. I read this post aggressively frowning. Mayo. Raw tomato. No meat.

      All of it. So upsetting.

I’ve been eating tomato sandwiches since I was tiny, exactly as you describe. Although sometimes we’d swap white bread for potato bread. My grandparents always grew tomatoes in my backyard growing up, so we always had a TON and they were HUGE. You’d go out pick a nice ripe tomato, slice it up, and slap it on the sandwich. I used to bring them in my lunchbox, even though the other kids made fun of me. I knew they just didn’t understand the awesomeness.

I have to agree that potato bread is superior to white bread, particularly for this application. It has a little more muchness to it without trying to take over the spotlight on the tomato as the star of the show.

Potato bread is indeed superior, because it has more body than white bread. And tomatoes warm from the garden —>> more flavor, better texture.

I so wish I liked tomatoes. People do such amazing looking food with them, but whenever put that food in my mouth I’m reminded that I just can’t with those delicious looking red bastards.

I’m very picky about them. It’s a texture thing. Small pieces (like in fresh salsas) are great. Slices are okay on sandwiches and whatnot. Big chunks are gross. Whole cherry/grape tomatoes make me gag just thinking about them.

Fuck some red tomatoes. I grow one beefsteak plant a year to oblige my neighbors. The rest are wonderful shades of yellow, orange, purple, and black.
