    Off topic:

In an incident that vividly recalls that one time I told myself thigh-high tights were a very good idea and would definitely stay up

You gotta get the ones with the sticky rubber stuff at the top that adheres the tights to your thighs. Do you guys know what I’m talking about? Those things are great, and they do stay up.

Yes, but you have to be SO CAREFUL about your movements. Ever have that rubbery stuff pull against your skin? Motherfucker, that hurts.

First thing I thought of, lol. Jesus, though, can’t they just let these amazing female athletes just be athletes? They’re competing in tennis not pouring goddamn tea.

omg no no no no no no no no no no

did nike not ask a single woman who has played tennis about this dress?

ETA: as performance wear goes, this is the kind of thing i’d wear with leggings while spooning lo mein directly into my mouth.

I kind of immediately wanted it for loungewear. Those pleats are cute. I’d have to get it in black of course so the hot sauce, coffee, and chocolate stains would be less obvious.

See also: the influx of padded sports bras and wicking tanks. When I’m on a 4-mile run in Texas’ 97-degree heat, the last thing I am looking for is extra fabric (padding!) in my minimal running wear. Not only is it added warmth, but it acts as a sponge to gather sweat. I guess I’m overruled by people who think it’s more important that my breasts look large while I’m working out.

Ugh. This brings me back to my Tennis playing days in High School. We had to wear skorts. They were the absolute worst. This. I have no words for this. Way to go, Nike.

Before skorts were skirts and dresses with undie covers. Like cloth diaper covers. Consider yourself lucky.

oh, see, i liked the skorts. ours were flat front and didn’t look like skorts, just had the built in shorts on the inside.

our tops were way short, though. like if i bent down to pick up a ball, i could feel a breeze on my back.

“It’s nice” is usually what I say about things I don’t really like but feel like I should try to be at least slightly positive about for the sake of others feelings.

This reminds me of walking thru Dick’s Sporting Goods a few years ago looking for women’s running shorts. Nike’s contribution were something I could only compare to the bottoms of a two piece bathing suit. Maybe some ladies want to run with spandex crawling up their butt. And the rest of the major sportswear companies weren’t much better.

I need pockets, a looser fit, and something that I can wear to run errands before or after a run. I have a bathing suit, I prefer not to run around my neighborhood in it.

    Seriously Nike, WTF?

Also: Longer shorts are essential if you have thighs that rub together even a little bit.

Did no one at Nike test run this?

I am the farthest thing from an athlete or designer, but one look at that dress and you know it’s a nightmare if there’s even a hint of a breeze.

      Meanwhile, athletes/designers Venus and Serena:

      >Serena Williams will be wearing a version of the outfit from her own collection, the Nike Women’s Premier Wimbledon Serena SW19 Dress ($200), though hers is tighter on the bodice and includes a pleated skirt with two tiers in back.

      >Venus Williams wore a T-shirt dress she had designed herself as she won her opening match

Serena’s dress is really cute and prevents cameras from looking down your top when you bend over.

They are allowed to play in shorts. Dresses or a top and skirt can be more comfortable. When I played (recreationally), I preferred to wear a dress.

YES. It is 2016. We should all be okay with the idea that women can play tennis in shorts.

I’m going to go with Tim Gunn’s professional advice: If you have to ask whether it is a shirt or a dress, it’s a shirt.
