There’s some truth to this, as the reactions of smug elites to the Brexit vote demonstrate.

Eh, there is truth to this

I love the EU and wish the UK had stayed in, but the anti-democratic, sneering and condescending reaction to a majority vote has been a bit gobsmacking tbh

At least in one segment of society, Bell was absolutely correct.

It’s gobsmacking that people have a reaction to a global event that sent the markets into chaos?

Christ, this guy gets ever more insufferable and I didn’t think that was possible. I can’t get behind a columnist who waxes nostalgic about a time when women and minorities weren’t so loud. The constant condescending tone he uses to talk about the “working class” is enraging, like he’s envisioning the fly-over states populated entirely by Tom Joads - simple and uneducated, and at the same time more noble than the rest of us. Give me a break.

Always fascinated by his written vs spoken opinions. I read him and think what at total ass-hat he is, but during his appearances on Fridays on NPR, he much less so. I wonder, if given the time to think about it, he tends to bloviate and if that is his true nature. His unscripted responses are so much more relatable.

Somehow, this message has to be given to poor whites. If they had a fucking clue as to how cats like Brooks think about them, theres no way they’d ever vote republican again. Pride is literally their last bastion

The working class has been decimated by David Brooks and his crony ideological pay masters. It has been decimated by Liberals who think that being left only means supporting gay and abortion rights. It has been decimated by the defunding and defamation of public education and public employment. It has been decimated by political parties more interested in dividing and conquering than lifting a single finger to help the working class. It has been decimated by the Democratic party that pretends to give a shit about Unions and African Americans during elections but votes against both’s interest when given the opportunity. Fuck David Brooks and fuck the New York Times. Any newspaper that who have that mediocre POS on the payroll for the past 20 years does not deserve to be read.

One of the greatest posts in the history of GM and it has 3 likes (at the time of this writing).

How dare you insult the Democratic Party, sir! Hilary Clinton is going to do so many great things for the poor and colored. Great things. It’s going to be Yuge. The best. Some people don’t want to vote for her because she’s still a neo-liberal. Sad!

Your first sentence is the a perfect description of most of the problem. Your second is just perfect. The rest is also accurate.

Now I am obviously just speculating here, but I imagine if David Brooks had been born an entitled WASP 50 years earlier than he was, he wouldn’t be extolling the honor code of the noble working class of the time, he would be waxing nostalgic about how noble peasants were 50 years earlier.

You are right! With a name like “Brooks” and having gone to an Episcopal school, he is well camouflaged.

“Anybody who spends time in the working-class parts of America...” not only is this a very weak lede but it makes it seem that the author himself does not spend time in these unspecified places.

Yep this country is being ruined by:

    A) cosmopolitan cultural elites, and

    B) rural rubes.

This Brooks fella, he’s sharp. Columnist, is he? Say, does he have any tips on how to get chewing gum out of shag carpeting?

I can’t speak for him but:

      Steps to Remove the Gum:

      1. Fill a small plastic bag with a few pieces of ice.
      2. Rub the ice over the gum to freeze it hard.
      3. Use the spoon or dull knife to scrape it away. Dispose of the removed gum immediately before it softens and sticks again.
      4. Repeat until the gum is removed.

Ya gotta get an ice cube on that sucker. Once the wad gets hard from the cold, you can unstick it.

My husband is obsessed with PBS Newshour and particularly enjoys the segment with him and Mark Shields. Usually Brooks comes across as a reasonable person but I’m wondering if that’s just because what most conservatives talk about is absolutely batshit crazy.

The latter. Brooks comes across as measured, reasonable-seeming, and not a frothing bigot. Which, in the Era of Trump, practically makes him a balaclava-wearing leftist agitator in the eyes of many contemporary republicans.

It’s a culture that celebrates people who are willing to fight to defend their honor. This is something that progressives never get about gun control. They see a debate about mass murder, but for many people guns are about a family’s ability to stand up for itself in a dangerous world.

OK. Let’s say I accept this as true. Where is the value of this insight? If you’re just telling us “Gun lovers will as soon give up their semiautomatics as give up their families,” why is that something progressives would do well to understand? If I “get” that you consider ownership of an AR-15 and high-capacity clip essential to the well-being of your children, how am I supposed to adjust my messaging or whatever to advance my cause? Because if there’s no room for concession in the gun lovers’ position — which it sure sounds like there isn’t — then all my understanding is doing is dragging the debate onto their rhetorical turf.
