      I would argue that Trump is actually carrying his entire team. None of these stunningly incompetent morons that he started his campaign with could get jobs in public without him, and I have a hard time imagining that they played any meaningful role in his success in the primaries.

      Anyone could have done Hope Hicks’s job of failing to respond to media inquiries and forgetting to disseminate the candidates’ message to the press and the public. Anyone could have done Corey Lewandowski’s job of standing around Trump and telling him that every stupid, disgusting impulse he has should be proudly displayed to everyone in the country immediately.

      He would have gotten the same results by putting together a ‘team’ randomly assembled from the phone book.

      Donald Trump is a horrific candidate, don’t get me wrong, but let’s not downplay how inept the team he had is. These people would have wrecked any other candidate. Hell, people like this *have* wrecked other, better candidates. Trump rode to victory on a wave of racial and populist anger over a divided field of candidates who were either lackluster or actively repellent.

      I feel like politics is probably the closest you can get in America to a true welfare commune. Once you land one job in politics, no matter how trivial it is or how badly it ends up, you are basically guaranteed a pretty good job somewhere else in the commune for the rest of your life. No one is ever a pariah, and the worst bozos and chuckleheads just get shuffled from campaign to campaign, Catholic priest-style, until they retire or die.

      It’s a pretty beautiful thing when you think about it. I’m sure this Miller is a good guy, but even if he isn’t — even if he is personally and clearly responsible for the destruction of Cruz’s presidential aspirations, it won’t interfere with his ability to get hired doing the same thing for someone else. I don’t think it would even be raised in an interview.
