SO, if I am understanding this correctly, Baz Luhrmann put up the money, and put his name behind it, but he is allowing the actual pioneers of hip hop tell their own story.

I’ll give it a shot, even if just to see how it all turns out. His visuals can be overwhelming, but so long as he stays true to the actual story, this might actually be pretty good.

It sounds the polar opposite to Vinyl. May not be a fan of Baz’s films, but he is making a good choice here.

That looks amazing. I cannot wait. I love a good, musically-driven series.

    You guys,

It’s so weird to see my people on tv. like it goes to show how we subconciously default to white as normal. that just seeing a trailer like this feels abnormal. there have been a lot more all-black casts but typically they are comedy shows. So it’s nice to get something different.

(also I’m speaking of netflix/ hbo etc/ cable tye show quality, not network tv)

Lastly a little high here so yeah deep thoughts.

I can’t begin to imagine what it’s like to see so many people on screen that don’t look like you (i.e. most people you see on screen). Very much get what you’re saying about it feeling “abnormal,” even as we know it’s not at all.

I’m of the opinion that the way we as a culture tend to look at whiteness as the “objective” or “standard” or “normal” is the reinforced concrete holding up a lot of racism today. When you stop seeing it as any kind of objective standard, suddenly a lot of other things seem to fall apart.

The more we get shows and films like this, the more this becomes normal in the best of ways, the more we see blacks (and also hispanics sometimes), the better off we’ll all be. It will be a self-perpetuating cycle.

This looks bonkers, and also fantastic. I’m a sucker for a good Luhrmann (& some bad ones, as long as they contain fantastic wardrobes & music).

This also looks like one of those shows where I’ll wind up downloading a lot of new music.

I also appreciate that it comes out on the 12th, which should give me a solid 50,000 times to watch The Little Prince & sob openly when that drops a week before, & then I’ll detox with fabulous outfits & dancing & drama.

Punk is early 70s New York, though you could argue the sound originated earlier in Detroit with the Stooges and MC5. Malcolm McClaren “managed” the NY Dolls very poorly and briefly, and once he saw Richard Hell, he copied that look to the Sex Pistols helping provide the transition in popularity from glam to punk in England.

The word Punk is NYC bred, not British - it was coined in the early-mid 70s by John Holmstrom for which he named his eponymous Fanzine.

Overall the 70s music scene in NYC was a hodgepodge of Dance-funk, hip hop, glam, retro-rock, noise, disco, and punk that was in fairly constant flux.
