That video was terrifying. I had to take a shower and rub down with Benadryl. I am such a wuss.

Anya from Buffy The Vampire Slayer would disagree, but I think most others would be with you (myself included).

As disgusting as the mayflies (or fishflies, as they are called where I grew up) are, they are indicators of the health of local water bodies. I try to keep that in mind as I am doing the freakout dance as I frantically brush them off in an attempt to reach the inside of my car without a hitchhiker in my hair.

I also grew up calling them fishflies. And UGH. The SMELL. I remember several years when they coated every single surface and were just nasty. Yuck. But yes. Yay for good water quality.

The worst is when they would start to die and just chose the most gawd awful places and times to give up the ghost. You’d be out rowing on the river in the early morning thinking ‘oh what a lovely day!’ And then all these mayflies would take that opportunity to die and fall out of the sky—sticking to your sweaty body, your boat, the oars, the dock, all over clothing and inside your shoes, floating on the surface of the water—and now you are on the river miles from the dock and covered in dying bugs. Why can’t we have a nice water quality indicator, like frogs or pretty shiny fish?

Bless you. Between the Bible and the year they lived in the sod house, I was legitimately concerned about the threat locusts posed to me as a child.

I’ll never forget when I was a kid living in Baltimore and the 17-year cicadas hit. Oh they sucked so hard. Huge, red eyes, terrible at flying (went in car windows and caused accidents, etc.), left crunchy husks everywhere. One time I was lying on the floor watching TV, as I did whenever my parents left the house, and I looked down and saw a cicada crawling right up my shoulder. I stripped my shirt off and fled the room.

Yeah, and they didn’t smell like fish, like these mayflies supposedly do. And I liked their beady red eyes.

    The Mayfly

    By Douglas Florian

    A mayfly flies
    In May or June.
    Its life is over
    Far too soon.
    A day or two
    To dance,
    To fly—
    Hello
    Hello
    Good-bye
    Good-bye.

      Two questions:

      1. What’s a mayfly?

      2. And why does God hate us?

God may hate us, for reasons not unreasonable, but she is also inordinately fond of beetles.

The one thing I don’t miss about Michigan living, when these damn things rose up out of the lake and just covered everything. The smell, ugh. And driving around after they had hatched and were covering the roads, beyond gross. This season they’re supposed to be equally awful there. So much yuck.

I live right on one of the Great Lakes and these little servants of the old gods have been swarming my car and windows for days now. Fun fact: they literally give less fucks than honey badgers when you try to swat them away. They just sit there in legion with their little tails squiggling like sperm, harkening the coming of the Long Night.

      Sleep tight, friends.
