*sigh* You guys! This is precisely the type of fuckery that the First Amendment was drafted to prevent. What could POSSIBLY make anyone think that a law like this wouldn’t be struck down?

It was designed to be struck down. Now they can run their political campaigns with new stories of activist judges and thanks-Obummery.

Because we live in a land where this fuckery is celebrated.

It shouldn't have t be struck down, but these are the times we live in.

Abortion rights, gun control, gay rights, Benghazi report—all in all, not a bad day to be a Democrat. (I singled out gay rights because the ruling did nothing to help Trans people.

Remember when a Muslim flight attendant worked her beliefs (against serving alcohol) with her job by just getting someone else to serve it, instead of deciding that her planes just wouldn’t be allowed to drink?

Imagine the fit these same people would have thrown if that had happened instead!

I would much prefer to be refused alcohol than as important a service as marriage, but the point is that either way, if you can’t do your job—particularly as a bureaucrat with a tax-payer salary and thus a duty to the people—you need to step aside for someone who will.

I agree with your main points here, but alcohol on airplanes is a fundamental right in a civilized society. I’m not sure we can really quantitatively determine whether alcohol on planes or marriage is more important.

But, yeah, as long as people are able to get the services they are due, and without having to drive all over to the next county or whatever, I see no problem with having “crazy liberal Ed” do all the gay marriage licences. If the whole clerk’s office is full of bigots, then something needs to be done.

I agree with this so much. Public service is supposed to be just that: Public service. You shouldn’t be allowed to choose exactly which parts of the public you’re supposed to service, goddamnit.

Laws like these... are also white privilege. It’s overlooked because it’s not some douche bro rapist serving a weekend.. but it’s white people using their power to deny rights to EVERYONE who is not them. And, fuck mississippi.

Don’t like how the government works? Don’t work there.

Oops, I just covered majority of GOP with that statement.

The GOP isn’t in it because they are religious and want to hang on to conservative values; they only pretend to be devout Christians for money, and power—similar to many pastors and televangelists. These master manipulators have an entire group of extremely naive people at their disposal.

Can I just say that watching the political party that was somehow so staunchly anti-government for so many years finally get their comeuppance and knock themselves into obsolescence is just about the most satisfying thing ever? I’m so glad that it happened in my lifetime.

I’m sure that these same asshats fought to define “religious marriage” as a union between a man and a woman of the same race back in the 70's when interracial marriage was illegal.

By the way, Jesus condemned divorce more than gay sex/gay marriage/gay anything, but you don’t see anyone fighting to ban divorce in the name of the lord. This whole religion thing is based on popular opinion of a region, and nothing else.

I went to a wedding once where the pastor went on and on about marriage being forever and divorce being against God and any divorced people will go to hell. Meanwhile all us divorced heathens in the audience were shifting awkwardly and wondering why we were even invited.

But you know all these people think their divorce is the one exception to the rule, because they had an actual reason you guys, not just because they were lazy and didn’t take marriage seriously like every other divorced heathen.

But for the most part people just ignore the no divorce thing. People who have been divorced multiple times are still really worried about the gays getting to marry. You really can’t reason with these hypocrites.

Anyone who wants to make everyone follow all the rules of the Bible should first have to follow all the rules themselves. But then they’d probably be in prison for selling their daughter or stoning someone to death, so maybe it’s best for everyone if they just mind their own business.

I went to a wedding where the rabbi went on about how special and unique marriage was, overlooking the fact that this was the groom’s third marriage, the bride’s second, and they started dating while the bride was married to someone else. I had already left the room because I couldn’t stand the groom (family forced me to attend) so rather than pointing out that marriage wasn’t sacred where these two were involved, I just tried not to laugh too loudly.

And this is why mild-mannered atheists like me can sometimes become loud anti-theists. Hey Christian assholes, don’t want us calling you assholes, then stop trying to force us to follow your religious views by force of law.

Sharia Law unfortunately does exist in this country, at least in between when it passes and when courts overturn it (which isn’t all the time). Fuck Christians. And Muslims, Buddhists, Jews, Hindus, and Zoroastrians.

Woah, Hinduism and Zoroastrianism have zero effect on anyone outside of those religions in North America.

I care about people other than North Americans, though. But yeah, that was unclear considering it followed a sentence specifically about the US.

Also this is just an emotional reaction, I’m normally not anti-theist.

You know, I was able to convince several hard-core anti-trans rights republicans that being trans is an innate condition by showing them pictures of intersex babies. The argument is that if God knowingly made intersex babies, sometimes he might also mix up the boy brains and girl brains into bodies with boy parts and girl parts. God’s reasons remain unknown, but they’re now down with reassignment surgery to match up brains and parts.

According to the 1st amendment, you have the protected right to practice your religion. That does not mean you have the right to force your beliefs on others, ever. We have had this freedom since the inception of our country, and you do not get to change the rules. Please see the 14th amendment if you are confused about what kind of consideration you deserve. This is not about freedom of religion, they are legislating their fear of change, fear of difference, and wrapping their bigoted BS in the 1st amendment.
