Biles is an outlier in every sense. In an era where former superpowers in the sport are struggling to get consistent results with this code of points from their athletes, Biles has execution and difficulty scores a half to full point higher than her competitors (giving her an insurmountably huge lead) AND also performs with incredible consistency.

She’s the first gymnast I’ve ever seen who actually integrates the dance and tumbling portions of her routine. Doesn’t cost her one watt of power.

This saddens me :( The sport used to put so much more emphasis on the integration of the dance elements. Boginskaya? Gutsu? Mo Huilan? Milosovici? Silivas? Judges wanted a holistic performance showing off musicality, balletic positions and tumbling in a seamless whole, not just executing a series of acrobatic moves with some cutesy dance moves in between.

I always get irrationally excited about the Olympics. I’m not super into sports or especially patriotic but every 2 years I'm glued to NBC in a way that confuses my TV. This girl is amazing. I hope she gets all the medals.

Ya know, I used to love Dominique Dawes. Like, LOVE. So, to see that Simone is the clear favorite, after Gabby was the underdog at London and still managed to win gold, is absolutely astonishing to me. I love that little Black girls will be able to witness this. #BlackExcellence

and if they make a fuss over her hair like they did Gabby... I might have to (metaphorically) claw someone’s eyes out.

Omg I saw this comment on the scourge of the world, facebook, about Simone and Gabby. Someone called her “Crabby Douglas” because she didn’t look she was having fun compared to Simone. And I’m just like, whyyyyy do they need to be compared to each other? Let them live. Let them be great.

      Eta: Dominique Dawes, yes. YES.

In the lead photo, is that chalk on her legs or is that part of her outfit?

The gymnastic floor show routines are my favorite part of the Olympics honestly, I cannot wait to see what she does on the floor!

She is EXCELLENT on floor. Her second tumbling pass is called The Biles, and it blows my mind every time. It’s a double layout with a half twist at the last second. She gets SOOO much height.

Also - where was Biles 4 years ago? Was she too young?

I think she was too young and had not had her senior debut yet. She is 19 now. A person who is 15 can go to the Olympics, but their birthday has to be before specific date.

      That’s what I figured. Thanks!

That had to be frustrating to her, knowing that a silly (or not silly, I suppose, depending on how you look at it) rule might have kept her from making the team as its youngest member. That would certainly light a fire under my butt.

She’s an incredible gymnast - all the girls my sister coaches are obsessed with her, as they should be. I can’t wait to watch her dominate in Rio.

Nothing is a sure bet in this sport! She could blow out an ankle, or succumb to this enormous pressure and expectation. The all-around is hers to lose but this sport has chewed up and spit out a lot of favorites.

True, but don’t say “blow out” — you just made my ankles cringe and crawl up into my body! Let’s just say “injured”!

“has a carefree aura about her that seems to astonish people who consider gymnasts to be traditionally stoic and joyless”

THIS! She’s a breath of fresh air. Her routines are fun and modern but executed perfectly. The days of screaming coaches and pouting girls is over.
