Honest question here: Those folks who want to be released from voting for Trump—who are they going to vote for instead? Is there a consensus?

Exactly. Great question. Do they think they can resurrect Ted Cruz’s campaign corpse? Who would they try to replace Trump with? How can they build support for the usurper from July on? They need to accept they’re stuck with Trump.

Correll’s complaint alleges that the First Amendment protects delegates “right to vote their conscience, free from government compulsion, when participating in the selection of their party’s presidential nominee.”

What “government compulsion”? It’s just the compulsion of your own party’s stupid rules. Go to the beach with Trey Gowdy instead and you can be tyrant king of your sand castle.

There’s a VA state law that requires the VA delegates to vote for the VA primary winner. That was in the story you lackwit.

The Virginia state law that explicitly requires convention delegates (and their alternates) to vote for the candidate chosen by the primary. From the complaint:

Virginia law acts to strip them of that right, imposing criminal penalties on delegates who vote for anyone other than the primary winner on the first ballot at a national convention. That law cannot be sustained under the First Amendment or as a legitimate exercise of Virginia’s authority under the United States Constitution.

Edit to add: The actual law in question is:

“....those delegates and alternates shall be bound to vote on the first ballot at the national convention for the candidate receiving the most votes in the primary unless that candidate releases those delegates and alternates from such vote.” Va. Code § 24.2-545(D)“

      Penalties:

“Violations of Section 545(D) are Class 1 misdemeanors subject to prosecution and criminal punishment. Va. Code § 24.2-1017; Va. Code § 24.2-1001. Under Virginia law,a Class 1 misdemeanor is subject to “confinement in jail for not more than twelve months and a fine of not more than $2,500, either or both.” Va. Code § 18.2-11(a)“

Edit to also add: Sheesh...what’s it take to get out of the grays around here?

In some ways the Trump nomination is like the Brexit vote. Everyone got excited at first but now everyone is realizing how terrible of an idea it was.

Usually the convention is time for the “rising stars” to make an appearance, so Mia Love not attending is hilarious. It’s an unspoken acknowledgement of his racist bullshit.

The Republican National Convention Is Going to Be Such a Mess

The DNC in Philly is also shaping up to be FUBAR insanity.

PENNDOT just announced vehicles over 5T will be banned from I95 (Airport to the Walt Whitman) for the week of the convention.

Yay, Box trucks, moving vans, large RV’s and 18 wheelers get to snarl traffic on the surface streets instead. Great thinking.

Just avoid Philly from 7/22-7/29 if you can. Your sanity will be better off for it.

I think Democrats would much prefer a convention that produces lousy traffic in one city for one week than a convention where a significant portion of the party is in open revolt over the presumed nominee and party leaders are avoiding like the plague.

Revised RNC Convention schedule (from the desk of Reince Priebus):

    Monday, 7/18:

1pm. Call to order, presented by Hobby Lobby. Check under your seat for a coupon for 10% off craft supplies!

2pm. Cheerleader dance party. (No fat chicks.)

3pm. Franklin Graham leads us in prayer. For three hours. Collection plates will be passed until Samaritan’s Purse has enough cash to give every Haitian child a gold-plated Jesus action figure.

6pm. Hologram of Reagan giving 1984 RNC convention speech. Counselors will be on hand at the end of each aisle to assist those overcome with mourning and a sense of impending doom.

7pm. Enjoy the comedy stylings of Larry the Cable Guy! Sponsored by the National Rifle Association.

8pm. Trump’s wife gives makeup tips and discusses her husband’s “assets.” Check the Jumbotron for subtitles, because she’s foreign.

9pm. Early delegate vote. Free camo riot helmets available for pickup in the atrium area.

10pm. Trump speaks early because he’s bored and doesn’t want to wait until tomorrow to claim victory. Tries to talk over the KKK dance party on the mezzanine, sharts himself. Mitt Romney curls up in the fetal position behind a curtain. Lindsey Graham releases 10,000 balloons filled with ricin.

11pm. Early adjournment after cancellation of subsequent events. More cheerleaders!

Oh, whoops... forgot to include the steak dinner. Throw that in there somewhere. Just literally throw red meat onto the floor of the convention center and let the bastards fight over it.

Wait a minute, if delegates get to vote for just...whoever...doesn’t that essentially invalidate the entire purpose of a primary? If the majority of people in your state vote a certain way, they want to be able to just say “NAH BRO” and do something else?

Doesn’t seem very Freedom-y of an idea for Conservatives.

Actually, it fits in perfectly. They are concerned about their OWN freedom of speech—not that of the people who they are supposed to be representing.

One of the first rules of politics and warfare: Don’t interfere when your opponent is destroying himself.

I would like to urge anyone planning on heading out to Cleveland to protest this to keep it peaceful and give the convention center a wide berth. Keep the story about the Republicans killing themselves, not about fighting between protestors, police, and Republican delegates.
