JFC. I love how completely this post has managed to exhibit Jesse’s point about equality.

First, his speech is more about Justin Timberlake and his dumbass, white-boy tweet.

Second, the first reply to this post isn’t about the amazing, emotional speech or even Justin’s tired-ass response to it. Nope, it’s about the SCOTUS decision which, while important, was not the topic of discussion. Give it ten minutes...you’ll have your post to comment on.

So, congrats again on completely allowing the point to fly right over your heads.

Calm down. If you are concerned about civil rights then you celebrate all the wins, not just the ones that concern people that look like you.

If you don’t like the flow of the comment thread- start a journal. You are guaranteed an echo chamber there.

To be clear, Jesse Williams made a wonderful speech and JT didn’t get what he was trying to convey.

I don’t get it. Hitting JT with the cultural appropriation hammer just feels like petty, “take my ball and go home” stuff. He’s not a cultural tourist. He’s not going through an “urban” phase. He makes music that sounds very much like the music of someone who grew up in Memphis would make.

And people turning “we are the same” into “all lives matter” are just being willfully obtuse so they can have another target to take down for the cause.

This is dumb. Go harass Meghan Trainor or something.

Can we really say that someone who has been a celebrity since he was about twelve “grew up” in Memphis?

He listened to that whole speech and somehow came away with “we are one race”. That is...a unique skill.

Basically, Justin Timberlake gentrified and appropriated Jesse Williams speech...then critiqued someone’s resistance.

We can always count on the humble cis/white/men to make our points for us.

I was done with Timberlake when he threw Janet Jackson under the bus after their Super Bowl stunt.

I’m so glad more people are joining me on the hater train!

That line killed me. I wasn’t watching the BET awards (no cable) but I clicked to watch that speech last night and it was easily in the top 10 best decisions I’ve ever made.

“If you have critique for the resistance, of our resistance, then you better have an established record of critique of our oppression,” he says. “If you have no interest in equal rights for black people, then do not make suggestions for those who do. Sit down.”

    SAY. IT. LOUDER.

I only have basic cable, so this is my first time watching Jesse’s speech. I really wish social media and the media hadn’t made it all about Justin Timberlake. All I see are headlines about JT, while the original message is pushed aside so a bunch of mouth breathing online commenters can turn this back into how black people get their own award shows and need to know their place.

True. And of course there are all the people who are all like “Poor Justin! Damned if you do, damned if you don’t! He’s right, though. We really are all the same. One world. One love. Kumbaya m’lord. I have no idea what the content of Jesse’s speech actually was, but here is a random 10-point list for why I think Black Lives Matter is actually more racist than the Ku Klux Klan. But we all bleed red, though, y’all. Can’t we all just get along?” etc.

Jesse’s speech has been entirely glossed over and really is it surprising when it’s Justin’s MO to crowd out black people.
