Seattle Police say they are working with the FBI to investigate a hate crime attack after a transgender person was beaten unconscious on their way home from a fundraiser for victims of the Orlando shooting this week, the Associated Press reports.
Investigators say Michael Volz was walking to their car after the benefit show on Wednesday when a white man in an orange sweatshirt said, “Hey, happy Pride,” and began choked and punching them. According to Volz’ GoFundMe page, the man said, “Show me your tits, you tranny cunt,” during the attack.

Serious question, is this in the Gawker style guide or something?

  It’s the slightly more common ( though not in generally ultra- sensitive liberal circles, which are strict on knowing 100 percent how someone, especially a victim, identifies) accepted format when the person’s gender identity is unclear, yes.
  
  Some (I would say most in my purely anecdotal, if NYC experience) would prefer you make the reasonable assumption, in this case ‘he’, since ‘they’ is incorrect, somewhat absurd and a bit de-[/poly-?]humanizing, but I’m fairly sure this style is INTENDED to be the lowest chance to offend readers, mistakenly or not.

  Thanks. Since he already identifies as Michael, I just assumed you include the (seemingly) obvious pronoun. In an attempt to not offend, it seems the “they/their” actually feels more likely to offend.
  
  So, I guess the style is that unless a person explicitly identifies what to be called in print, you do “they/their,” even when they give you their name?

  I honestly don’t know which is better if it is a hoax than it men’s that someone didn’t bash them, which is good, but a hoax is also bad.
  
  It is sad that the world has gotten to the point that we can’t take an activists claims at face value anymore.

  Being a former high school wrestler, and thus seeing a lot of my dumb “tough guy” peers get into fights, I can vouge from the photos it legitimately appears he was stomped in the face by someone. The marks from that are very tell-tale and unique. From the report here, he might have been unconscious when it happened as he didn’t mention it in his recollection, but that’s precisely what those marks look like. It causes a scraping like this, kind’ve like road rash from the friction of the footwear. And you can see the motion of such stomping movement from the location of the cuts (up/down) and on one side. (You only usually see one-sided damage from kicking or stomping, because the attacker is using their other foot to stand their weight on while swinging the other.)

As someone who has been in the same situation, I can completely empathize with them being attacked like that. It’s horrible, and way too fucking common. I remember the first time it happened to me. I was at the Colorado Mills mall in Golden, and I’m walking back to my car from the borders they had there, when this guy starts following me. I sped up, and so did he. I then flat out bolted to my car, but he tackled me to the ground, and started screaming about how god hates fags, and he is a holy warrior for god. The only reason I didn’t end up dead, was the fact that someone else ran up and chased the guy off. I was just in shock over the whole thing (and a major concussion), but when the guy noticed I was trans, he literally said, I should have let you die freak.

So yeah. I know all about this kind of thing. From knees that don’t really work anymore, my left hand being nearly useless, and more concussions than someone who isn’t a prowrestler or athlete should ever have. The rest of the injuries have healed, but the mental damage never will.

Want to take your unarticulated frustrations out on someone? Find a hedge fund manager. Jesus. Trans people have had enough torment for a thousand lifetimes. Just try to imagine waking up in the wrong body even for just one day. I’ve tried to imagine it myself many, many times and still think I’ve come up short.

I used to work with a person who was in the process of transitioning from male to female. I’ve rarely seen that level of grace, philosophy and tolerance in any other human being I’ve ever known.
