I thought people in the heartland - those true grit, real Americans - could overcome every hardship on their own, solely with their bloody callused, bare hands?

I suppose the federal government and its fresh-faced flower child President stepping in to help is not such a bad thing after all, eh?

West Virginia has a Democratic governor. Bernie won it by a huge margin in the last primary. West Virginia exists because it refused to be part of the South/slavery in the Civil war. The labor regulations that keep you safe on your job are the direct result of West Virginians who struck, unionized, and DIED for your rights.

And Charlie Daniels (the guy in the video you posted), was born and raised 500 miles south of the flood site.

But to be fair, yes, because of sociopaths who refuse to learn their own country’s history, these WV flood victims will most likely have to fight the waters on their own, while smug bigots make ignorant jokes about their plight.

West Virginia just gets the shit end of the stick all the time, from every direction. It’s not right, the amount of shit they have to deal with from their own corporations, government, and fucking nature itself. But to their credit, they don’t complain, they just go to work (even if it’s a deadly job like coal mining), raise their families, go to church, and do their thing. I hope they get a lot of money and investment to rebuild and recover from this.

People of color just get the shit end of the stick all the time, from every direction. It’s not right...

Fixed. And I believe WV is home to the factory where American racists are manufactured. I don’t feel sorry.

I hope they get a lot of money and investment to rebuild and recover from this.

I hope they pull themselves up by their own bootstraps and work to rebuild their own homes by their own sheer grit and determination. No welfare for these proud Americans.

You won’t get enough stars for this. If there’s one thing people here love to do, it’s bask in the misery of those with whom they believe they disagree (politically, religiously, environmentally).

I’m right with you. West Virginia deserves a fair shake just one fucking time, at least.

I’m a “libtard” as the pieces of crap like to call me and I am also from WV. I’m tired of the stereotypes when the real river trash is actually not the majority of the people. The issue is young people leave for better jobs. But WVians in and of themselves are no different than the rest of the fucked up country. They just happen to live someplace with few cities and universities. Let’s shit on disadvantaged people. It’s fun!

I’m only defecating on the people who get all pissy in the comment section. Half the people standing up for WV would make fun of any other tragedy in any other state. But it’s suddenly “supra serious” because “hey don’t make fun of the poor uneducated white people.” Fucking hypocrites, the lot of ya! THE LOT OF YA!

Let’s see some West Virginians defend Mississippi, Alabama, FLORIDA, or gasp, Virginia! They’d be right at home making some sort of joke at the expense of others. But downright touchy ‘bout their own brethren. PFFT, a pox on you all. A vox populi on you all, I should say.

So let’s see...in 2012, WV voted almost 2/3 in favor of Romney. In 2014 they bumped a Democratic senator in favor of a Republican one which helped to give the Republicans the stranglehold they’ve had on Congress the last few years. They’re also one of the states with a raging heroin problem who nevertheless benefited significantly from Obamacare’s reforms despite a number of their larger business interests railing about how it would hurt profits and costs for employment.

Now they’re flood-ravaged and he’s helping them out again, but I guarantee there’s a good portion of them even now with FEMA blankets wrapped around them somehow mindlessly muttering about ‘the Kenyan Muslim’ being responsible for their house converting from RV to yacht in one afternoon.

I'd say West Virginia was already a disaster area before this. Along with a number of other idiot states.

WV tends to vote Republican for president and a mix of R and D for other positions... therefore everyone in WV deserves to drown. Did I get that right?

People die and have their lives ruined in a flood: it’s funny!

I’m a WV native. I wasn’t raised Republican and half of our family friends are lesbians - saying this so I don’t get accused of being a “redneck conservative” — because that’s not my total experience there. That said, I’m getting very discouraged by the democratic leadership of the state. People are saying, “Oh look, Jim Justice thought helping the locals means more than the Greenbrier Classic.”.... Bullshit. He’s a climate change denier. And so is Manchin. We’ve all heard our grandparents and parents talk about floods when they were kids washing away little towns. But they built dams, etc. since then. I’m not going to bash people who have next to nothing. But when you have BILLIONAIRES like Justice in position of power and influence, they have an ethical duty to educate themselves.

well, you gotta ask yourself, and your fellow WVs, who elected a 1% to office?

and dont forget, he had been a member of the republican party until feb 2015.

I see a lot of “they’re all racist”, “they’re all redneck trash”, comments.... Honestly, there are a lot of black people in this state. Since you’re apparently smarter than us, correct me if I’m wrong... WV went north, WV in fact had a lot to do with the underground railroad, I live maybe a mile from a “stop” on it. There are racists everywhere, and that term is not limited to white people the way some like to think it is.

In this state a great number of us aren’t permitted to get flood insurance, yet we live in towns that have lasted more than 100 years or sometimes more without a major flood, and yet we are denied, or pay insane premiums. We pay taxes too...

Come here, any of you people that are talking shit please come here and say your ignorance face to face to nearly anyone that lives here, white or black. I promise that I would say anything to you face to face, do you have the balls? Westboro come here once...they were in front of the Capitol protesting and I distinctly remember several of their members getting their asses kicked and one of them being set on fire. Again, come to WV, then say what you have to say, or at least stop being a little pussy and hiding your real names and talking shit on the internet behind a mask.

Many people died in a few hours of rain, more than there have been killed in this country annually by tornadoes during most years, and you all seriously want to make fun of that?

Um, I know Gawker prides itself on disavowing any type of style guide from the AP to the Chicago Manual, but in the lede...it’s President Barack Obama to you and your readers on the first reference, OK? Can you at least show a modicum of intelligence and decorum?

I noticed also that despite dozens of comments correcting your spelling of “Quatar” in a story several days ago you never acknowledged the error or appended a correction...maybe at least try proofreading before posting?

No, actually it did not, particularly under the Bush regimes, as Bush father, son, and Jeb had to be distinguished amid. Also, spelling the name of sovereign nations correctly isn’t a fad; it’s the basis of the language of the hosting institution, which in this case is English, allegedly.
