To hell with the 22nd Amendment. This guy has certainly earned a long vacay, but we need him to hang around for another four years.

This is clearly reverse discrimination. I can just feel that this monument is making me less of a person because I am not gay.

Or it will be someone complaining that Stonewall’s new status somehow prevents them from exercising their right to practice (homophobic) Christianity.

Or that it somehow devalues other monuments.

Please clarify that it’s the small park directly in front of Stonewall — Christopher Park with the George Segal sculptures — that’s the monument, not the privately owned business. Parks Dept. isn’t in the bar business. :) It’s a wonderful, welcome gesture and I’m thrilled about it but let’s keep things accurate.

Official: “Stonewall National Monument is a new national park unit located in Christopher Park, part of New York City’s Historic Greenwich Village. ... The monument sits across the street from The Stonewall Inn, a National Historic Landmark known for its involvement in the beginning of the modern struggle for civil rights of gay and lesbian Americans. The Stonewall Inn exists as a private establishment and working bar.” https://www.nps.gov/ston/learn/ind...

Thanks for the clarification! The Parks Service also administers the National Historic Landmark program (says the former intern who once had to re-file all the NHL folders for the Northeast region), so there is some cohesiveness. Most NHL’s are privately owned.

Sadly they were too late to save the Stonewall Inn from gentrification.

I’ve been re-watching the Ken Burns’ National Parks doc this week. The Antiquities Act is an amazing thing, the fact that the president has the power to protect virtually anything as a national monument. If I was president I think it would be my favorite part (and of course there is a West Wing episode where Barlet is just tickled that he gets to use this privilege).

I have only one problem with this and that’s the fact that now I have to listen to all the morons who will say that if Stonewall is a national monument than their straight corner bar should be too. God, I am the height of straight white male privilege and I’m glad because I have no idea how the rest of you deal with the daily serving of bullshit. Oh well, at least this is some recognition of a very real struggle. Congratulations!

You don’t have to listen to them, you could always say something. And, as for the rest of us and how we deal with the daily struggle, what choice is there? And, before anyone gets all worked up, my partner in life is one of those straight, white males with inborn privilege, so....

But, the fact that you acknowledge the reality for some folks is different than yours if big. Seriously. So many people just don’t want to believe that the deck is that unfairly stacked against some from jump. You are not responsible for that, nor am I. But, we are responsible for trying to live our lives in a way that helps to balance that.

Oh, and the beer’s on me next time I see you my friend!

The first out gay person I ever knew was a cousin of my mother who was at the Stonewall when it was raided. He passed away a few years ago but he was one of my favorite relatives.

I’m glad this happened. Yes, there’s a long way to go but I’m 30, I remember when Ellen came out. It’s like a different country now.
