We’re really bad at stories that resist easy judgments. We might despise the hot take, but deep down we love it. Problem is, life isn’t a fairy tale, and those easy judgments come back to haunt us. Sometimes life is just complicated.

The guy that made those comics sure turned out to be a fuckhead, though.

I think the fact that there’s a Dallas BBQ in Chelsea can in itself be considered a hate crime.

Honestly, it’s an even bigger crime they have the nerve to call it “BBQ.”

“That, along with our cultural imperative to believe a victim when he speaks out, meant that Snipes’ narrative prevailed.”

No Rich, speak for yourself. Not everyone jumps to conclusions every time something happens to a gay person which you so painfully always do.

Also, who cares about hate crimes. Getting hit with a chair hurts just the same either way. Punishment for crimes should be the same across the board regardless of the emotion behind them.

That’s the problem with the court of public opinion. There are always two sides to a story. In this case, it’s basically a traditional bar fight, not some hate crime. People using the weight of hate crime legislation in cases like this where there is no hate crime, cheapens and makes the laws disreputable.

I’m amused by the notion that stories have two sides.

Some stories are multifaceted. But I’ll grant in the US, we tend to tell 2-sided stories, probably to satisfy the idea that a 2-party system is natural and good.

It’s not people in general, it’s writers looking for an angle in every case with which to sell their agenda. This is a case that could have been treated as a hate crime and a black queer man could be a victim of overzealous prosecution, so the Village Voice writer just went ahead and wrote about it as if that were really the case, because it made for a better story. In reality, it sounds a lot more like petty assault committed by someone with a criminal record.

If El-Amin had called Snipes a “faggot” before their brawl, as Snipes alleged, could it still be considered a hate crime, especially given the intricacies of queerspeak, in which not all “faggots” are equal (out of the mouth of a gay man, the word can be neutral, endearing, or hateful )

    Um, no.
This word is a negative out of EVERY mouth. This isn’t a “nigga” equivalent in the slightest. If I hear you call me a faggot you’re gonna get your mouth popped, I don’t care if you’re RuPaul himself. Stop trying to “take back” every negative word in the dictionary; some are not meant to be taken back.

I actually sat on the jury for this and what this is leaving out is El-Amin kicked the guy’s ass twice before hitting him with the chair. He wasn’t even charged with the first one because it was in response to being hit first and the law allows you that even with a little purse. What happened was it looked like the fight was over and the victim was licking his wounds with his boyfriend when El-Amin suddenly grabbed a chair and smashed it over their heads, actually knocking the boyfriend unconscious. That’s why a jury with at least 7 people of color (including myself) voted him guilty.

And even though it was never spoken aloud that El-Amin was gay (probably because he wasn’t being charged with a hate crime) his very bad lawyer did let it slip at least twice.

The fact that there were 3 attacks is likely new to most of us reading about this case- thank you for sharing your viewpoint as a juror. Sounds like the victims might have been assholes, but the response seems rather outsized regardless. Team No One.

That Snipes struck El-Amin first (with a purse) was a crucial bit of information that he left out of his initial account but was revealed during the trial.

Ummmmm...it was left out of Gawker’s initial account(s) too. So you mean this whole thing started because some queen hit another queen with her purse?!

Rich, you’re a wonderful writer and fantastic interviewer, but you should own up to your original take on this too. You jumped on the homophobic hate crime bandwagon too and got very pissy in the comments section when others pointed out that there might be more to the story. If you’re going to pat yourself on the back for “finding conclusive evidence” and go after others for their misleading writing, you should be able to take ownership of your own role in incorrectly guiding the narrative of the story too.

He also basically came right out and called this guy a faggot before he knew the guy was gay himself. The reporting on this story from this site has been a terrible shitshow from the very first post.

“They did this because they are fucking cowards who have a lot of nerve calling anyone else a faggot.”

        Or maybe not, eh, Rich?

The only reason Rich has a hard on for this VV article is because it was written by Grace Dunham, sister of Gawker’s Prime Target #1 Lena Dunham. Trust me, he wouldn’t give a solid fart shit if it was another writer. This about making her look dumb, which is just more NY media bullshit sniping. You guys deserve so much better than this shitty company and its writers shitty gripes with people who have better careers than them.

This about making her look dumb,

I think she made herself look plenty dumb all on her own. Much like when Gawker complains that Peter Thiel made them bankrupt, when it was really them posting that stupid revenge porn.
