    Off topic but I didn’t realize that white people are the minority in dc. I live here (sadness) and everywhere I go I feel like there are easy more Caucasians than people of color.

      I am not trying to be snarky when I say that this might be an indication of the kinds of social and employment circile that you run in. As I understand it most of the white folk that you are seeing commute into the city to move, shake and work and then go back out to the suburbs at the end of the day and/or after their preferred “happy hour.” The permanent residents are mostly black folk who are largly underrepresented in the political and governmental elite/functionaries (the commuters).

    White Americans make up 44.6% of New York City’s population.

    The company, which oversees a network of websites, including the eponymous Gawker, is mostly white and mostly male.

    When it comes to race, Gawker fares worse than most major tech companies. Overall, Gawker Media is 79 percent white. By comparison, Google said this year that 60 percent of its overall staff is white. Facebook’s overall staff is 55 percent white; Apple’s workforce is 54 percent white. Gawker’s editorial staff is 78 percent white, Cook said.

    I’m just guessing here, but I would bet that that most donations of any kind to politicians, to charities, to NPR, etc., are mostly being made made by the white folks, because we have the most disposable income. From the middle class to the upper middle class to the 1%., you will destroy the percentages. If you’re a a minority and a single Mother of two kids, how much money are you going to have to donate to anything? I'm not saying that people of color don't donate when they can, but the sheer inequality of income stability should make this obvious.

              I’m from the West, where in a lot of places the racial dynamics are different from the standard black/white narrative one usually sees in the United States. I grew up varyingly poor/lower middle class. All the black adults I ever met were better off than my family. I read enough and watched enough TV to know on some level that black people, on average, get fucked harder than white people. But this wasn’t something I really comprehended to the point that it was an understanding that affected how I understood specific facts or related phenomena when presented with them.

              Not until I went to Washington DC. Something that struck me was that almost every person I met with a name-tag-and-overalls type job, everyone on the bottom of the food chain was black; and almost everyone I met who wore a suit was white (and none of them were black). I’d never seen such a stark division, and suddenly I understood.
