If only Germany had stricter gun laws...

The US has 10 times as many gun related deaths per 100,000 people that Germany does. I doubt that the majority of Germans would be willing to become more like the US.

I do like the general speed limit in the US. Driving on an Autobahn can be exhausting.

Because the last thing any Gawker readers need to hear is an opposing viewpoint. Keep those echoes sounding into bankruptcy

It seems like there’s a ton of confusion about whether anything happened at all. Looks like right now the only injuries were from tear gas...

“It remained unclear whether the armed man used a genuine firearm, as local media reports said a “gas or stun gun” had been used.

And police could not immediately confirm whether the weapon was genuine.

Earlier reports said up to 50 people had suffered minor during the hostage situation, but this was due to tear gas used by police, not the gunman.

“We have no information that anyone was injured,” Hesse state interior minister Peter Beuth said.”

So the only person actually injured was the guy who claimed to have taken hostages, who was shot and killed.

Late to the party it seems. I heard our local radio guy report this 3 times before completely back tracking.

Local media was reporting that he used a cannister of tear gas and did not shoot anyone. I am not sure this is 100% accurate but those were the first reports.

ETA: here is a serious (i.e non tabloid) report at Spiegel that states that contrary to earlier reports there were no injuries except from the killer. Google translate provides a decent enough idea.

It’s not true. Everyone is safe. Only injuries are the shooter’s death via police and tear gas injuries.

Your own links currently indicate the injuries are from tear gas, likely from police, not gun shot wounds. No one else is reporting any shooting victims besides the shooter himself.

I have seen at least 2 headlines rapidly change as a few facts trickled in. I am betting that far-right German tabloids jumped on the Syrian Refugee Brutally Executes 50 White German Christians in Theater Massacre!!! bit, but dialed it back when Police finally chimed in.

Gawker lives and dies by making headlines more extreme than the covered situation actually is. It generates more clicks.

And as of now, shooting deaths continue to remain rare as no one was killed or shot besides the shooter.

I wonder what a good guy with a gun would have done here to calm the situation.

We will never know, since it is virtually impossible for a civilian to get a carrying permit in Germany.

Yes we do. There was no better outcome in this situation than what happened.

It’s basically math at this point.

Pffft, Germans. Sure, you make a great car, but you can't out-mass-slaughter your citizens like America.

Was wondering if a) gawker was going to report on this at all and b) the article would mention how strict gun control laws are in Germany. Thank you for doing both.

Now let the cognitive dissonance begin!!!

Eh I don’t see the cognitive dissonance here. He apparently used a long gun, some types of which are entirely possible (and legal) to buy in Germany, especially in non-metropolitan areas where there are shooting clubs.

Gun control seems to have worked. If this guy had been in the US he would likely have killed several people.
