    ETA: The “you look like a queer” comment should be grounds for removal from the bench.

    ETAA: I’m a prosecutor. Most of my time is spent in the relatively civil appellate courts, but I’ve done a few years in the trial courts. While this accused takes it to another level, any judge who’s been on the bench for longer than two seconds has had to deal with mentally ill shit-talking/mentally sound but still shit-talking accused on a regular basis. If you can’t handle that shit and maintain your composure, you shouldn’t be making decisions about people’s liberty.

      I doubt it is. At the same time — and assuming the judge followed up on that particular threat — I wouldn’t want to represent this guy, as a public defender or otherwise, in trying to get that tossed.

      As for this judge: is he going for re-election, and pandering to the homophobic-tough-guy vote?

      On the extent of the contempt, I don’t know, but if he insists on defending himself in that manner, he’s not going to be able to challenge it. Although, I imagine much of his attitude is coming from a realization that however many years they add onto his existing sentence for homicide will mean he’s in jail until he’s dead anyway, so why care.
