I read a little more about the girl in the second story. She must have been so scared. She was trapped in the window seat and she was traveling by herself. Jesus.

Agree it’s awful but I also kind of question the necessity of diverting the flight? Was he being violent? Couldn’t they just seat him somewhere else and then have him arrested when they landed in Anchorage? Is there some legal thing where if a crime is committed mid-air the pilot has to divert the plane to the nearest airport?

Not just this incident either. There have been others where I wonder the same thing: they couldn’t just wait to land at their destination to arrest the dude?

I agree it's awful. I don't really know what the airline could have done to stop it though. As soon as they noticed it they separated the perp and the victim. I don't feel that the lawsuit is fair.

Ok ok ok ok that seems bad but has anybody found out if her skin was white as snow? Cause if so-I blame the liberal fairytale media for corrupting our middle aged adult pedophiles.

How’s he supposed to know WHEN it’s okay when they blast their Obama loving - pro dwarf garbage into every home. Think about it.

the PNW is full of fucking weirdos, Portland especially. The worst was that fucko in Portland a few years back who was SHAVING pieces of hair off women’s heads while on the bus, he was fresh outta jail because he was caught JACKING OFF onto women, again, on the bus, earlier.

I feel like in my experience, people here are not the type to go out of their way to like help you, which makes me sad. I called 911 just the other day on a lady who was probably just drunk and sleeping in her car, but she was parked all crazy in an underground lot, with the door open and not responding to me when I yelled at her. I called 911 because if that was me, I would HOPE someone would do the same, but I kind of doubt it here. In our bubbles of passive aggression. idk what it is.

I feel like it’s just people in the big cities who are so cold and unfriendly. We moved to a distant suburb of Seattle/Tacoma and the people are so much friendlier. (And they all seem to smoke cigarettes but I digress.)

I know that in groups of people, action is less likely to happen, but if just a few are around, you are more likely to take responsibility to get them help (i think Kitty Genovese was kind of disproved, but there was a different experiment on a train in NYC, where packed train cars were not helping an actor who had like a medical emergency, but if there were like 5 people someone would help him). But I’ve lived in cities before, and the PNW (Portland and Seattle) are so cold! what gives? is it all the douchy tech bros who dgaf? uptight white people? I wave to my neighbors and they look at me like i’m batshit. Like, don’t you want someone to notice if they don’t see you for a few days and like have someone to water your flowers when you go on vacation and bbq with? You’re totally right, I should just move to the Olympic peninsula like I want. Bainbridge was LOVELY. I miss it.

For the Camp story - it’s not clear, but sounds as though there were no passengers ticketed in the row with the 13-year-old. Does American have open seating like Southwest? There is no way that a dude choosing to sit in a middle seat next to an unaccompanied minor in an otherwise empty row should have been allowed to stay there.

As for yesterday’s incident- WTF. I flew by myself at 17 a lot and dudes would frequently try to chat me up. I’m retroactively horrified and trying to remember if I ever slept on planes.

I don’t remember not having a chaperone when flying. My mom would pay extra to have a female flight attendant escort me to the next flight and made sure I got to my family. However, this was in the nineties. Do they still do that?

Everyone is focusing on what the abuser did wrong, but I don’t hear anyone talking about the important thing — how did the victim bring this on herself?

What was she wearing? Had she ever let someone kiss her willingly? Did she like it? Did anyone else see this alleged kiss? Girls like to lie about these things for attention, you know.

And what the hell was she doing falling asleep next to a strange man? Why was she in a public place without a chaperone? Where were her parents?

Girls are just going to keep getting themselves raped and sexually abused if we don’t appropriately attack and shame every one it happens to. If you think anything different, you’re living in a politically correct fantasy world.

I’m actually really glad we’re not hearing any of that. Baby steps, I guess.

That said, I’m getting a big whiff of “why didn’t the flight attendants stop the abuser from abusing, it’s all their fault” instead of “why didn’t the abuser just...not abuse”, which still smacks of shifting the blame in a direction it doesn’t necessarily belong.

I don’t know I as a passenger would have noticed that poor girl’s situation. Did all the surrounding passengers get blamed, too? If we don’t blame someone else, we’d have to hold grown men accountable for their own actions!

What’s most disheartening is how often it comes from Jezebel regulars.

The first line of my comment was only minimally paraphrased from a recent comment on other post, which advanced a novel new theory that the commenter was baffled no one had ever tried before — why don’t we just start teaching girls that they have to stop getting themselves raped instead of teaching boys not to rape?

DING DING DING!!! WE HAVE A WINNER!

They don’t care because they don’t HAVE TO. White men in particular have always gotten away with this kind of shit. They likely will continue getting away with it for the foreseeable future, what with judges deciding that prison is soooooooo damaging to their fragile wittle psyches.

Until men are punished appropriately for this fucking bullshit behavior (since we clearly haven’t been successful in teaching them NOT TO DO IT IN THE FIRST PLACE), then they’ll keep doing it.

Pay no attention to what men are doing to young girls the real threat is trans women who need to pee. We have to protect our girls from the real predators.

It’s fucking maddening, isn’t it? I have never, ever, ever been afraid of or even taken aback by a trans person. I’ve been afraid of/skeeved out by/uncomfortable around so many men, I lost count in my teens.

that’s actually the argument the conservative psychos are making. they’re not saying it’s the real trans people who are the threats. they’re saying it’s pedophiles are will use trans-inclusive policies to masquerade into women’s restrooms. faking being trans for access. now let’s be real: both arguments are complete and utter bullshit. j/s, if you make that argument in a different context, someone will tell you that your fear of men is valid and it’s that that they are protecting you from

If I were on that plane, I would likely be pissed at the diversion. However, I would remember that this guy is learning a lesson he will never forget (and hopefully pass it on to his bros), and one diverted flight is a small price to pay if people start to learn about consent. Stop kissing and giving tea to sleeping teens.

IDK, he’s got to tell the people waiting for him in Alaska that he got kicked off the plane. When he says “I kissed some sleeping girl,” his friends and family might get outraged, or they might point out how stupid that was and he deserved what he got - the latter being the normal reaction to strangers kissing sleeping teens.
