Ha! I’ve got a tiny house in a boring place.

Take that, Mr... Census Bureau... if that IS your real name.

      House, huh?

I live in a tarp-covered hole in the woods. No big deal.

A tarp? How bourgeoisie. Just dig in at an angle like the rest of us. If it’s good enough for beavers, it’s good enough for me.

In all fairness, a great many beuatiful and glorious things can happen in the backseat of said 1982 VW Rabbit...

Car sex in a VW Rabbit with anyone other than a contortionist, a ballerina or a little person would be downright uncomfortable.

The VW thing is actually beginning to happen in NYC. As in, if you walk around the unclaimed parking areas around the BQE/Sunset Park, there are now mobile homes getting parked there. Half of which I’m pretty sure are being used as cathouses/shooting galleries. The other half of which are being used by hipsters who work in the Industry City complex.

I always thought a really viable option in NYC would be to just buy a full size nondescript box/delivery truck, put in a couple small windows in a manner that looked utilitarian, and just build an apartment in it. Seems like more space than some of the rentals I see there.

Judging from the shape most vehicles parked under the BQE are in, your odds are fairly good of a) someone smashing your windows while you’re asleep or b) dying of a heat exhaustion/CO poisoning combo.

What is a scarily viable option I’ve thought of, though? Getting set up in a RV park somewhere around Westchester or Rockland, then taking the Metro North down. You could write off the cost of commuting on your taxes while living on the cheap. Just figure out a place to shower and your upper tolerance for living as a hermit, and you’re golden.

If I were advising young people about their careers today, I would advise them to avoid the media and any occupation that is specific to only a handful of large cities. They wouldn’t listen, but I’d feel good about my advice.

I didn’t listen. We were lucky enough to have a brief period of success where we could save for a down payment on a house. It took two of us saving and living in crappy apartments. And it took timing, since we didn’t even consider buying until the 90's housing crash drove property values down far enough that we could afford a house.

But our friends weren’t so lucky, missed that tiny window of affordability, and have been unable to buy houses.

Lately, we’ve been auditioning other cities for a move in the next two years. St. Paul, MN is one of the nicest small cities we’ve been to. San Luis Obispo, Vancouver, WA, and Everette, WA are also pretty nice (we’re from California, so St. Paul’s sometimes epic winters supposedly would be beyond our ability to cope).

Every single person that I know who has moved away from LA, New York or San Francisco has been overjoyed with the decision. They are absolutely shocked by strangers being friendly, no traffic and the ability to get out of the city in a fraction of an hour. Except the ones who moved to Seattle and Portland. They just exchanged one big city for another. Also, the ones who moved to Austin have mixed feelings. They love Austin, but if they go outside that city, they’re in Texas.

Leaving Austin to go elsewhere in Texas is like leaving the colorful land of Oz and finding yourself in black and white Kansas. Texas is like a land of no hope, with really good barbeque and steaks.

Personally, my three favorite cities in the U.S. are Charleston, Chicago, and Denver. I do enjoy where I live currently (Nashville) as well.

Hey, when the “cities of the future” take hold...and the poors are scrunched up and tightly packed in the small-apartment buildings...and the riches are out in the “boring” places, in their large abodes, we’ll do this whole economic cycle business all over again!

You wanna be careful with that VW plan. Wal-Mart parking lots are where you find all the bodies around here. In cars.

Although apartments in the US are still larger than you’ll find in many other parts of the world—paris, tokyo, etc.
