You’re a better source than goodreads. Can you recommend a couple that you enjoyed the most?

Lyle also has evicted perhaps hundreds of men, women and children.

I can’t remember which memoir I read this in (I think it was Carolyn Jessop’s), but they talked about how FLDS compounds/towns would routinely evict young men and toss them out on their ass with nothing for unspecified sins. To get back in, they would have to write to the leaders and confess their sins and keep confessing things until they confessed to the one that they were allegedly evicted for, which could sometimes take years, if ever.

In the meantime, the leaders built huge files of “sins” on these guys that they could later use to discredit or blackmail them with on top of which, there were now dozens of young women with nobody to marry.

They ran them off specifically so the “elders” would have no competition for the young women.

Isn’t that a big thing in Scientology, too?

I’m exhausted just thinking about how much energy is expended on controlling people to that degree. I guess I’m not cut out to be a cult leader.

Also, you’d have to have sex with ALL your congregants. Too much organizing; too much energy.

My roommate is polyamorous and I’ve decided those two things are why I wouldn’t like it for myself. It just sounds exhausting.

Lyle also has evicted perhaps hundreds of men, women and children. Others have left on their own.

Shrinking the population in the two polygamous border towns down to the point where they’re suffering from serious inbreeding. I’m not joking about that, by the way.

Certainly a whole set of recessive problems. Hell, as this good article on it suggests, they might already be covertly euthanizing new children born with a ton of defects.

Peaceful Muslims? Not okay. Hey, they might instate Sharia Law! But let’s not ever talk about these white religious fucksticks who are literally controlling towns in the US and raping children. We’re totes okay with women and children being raped when it’s by white guys. /rage

Most Utahns descend from one of a few hundred polygamous patriarchs. There’s a significant degree of sympathy for polygamists, in large part because the federal crackdown on Mormonism in the 19th century was unconstitutional and based on white Protestant supremacy that painted Mormons as Not White. (There’s been a fair amount written on how Mormon racism in the 20th century derived in significant part from a desire to seem more a part of the American mainstream, which was REALLY FUCKING RACIST.) The LDS Church abandoned the practice of polygamy but has not renounced it and probably never will.

What’s generally not understood by Utahns is that the brand of polygamy practiced by the FLDS is much nastier than the generally austere variety of 19th-century Mormonism.

So true. I thought I was generally informed from local news coverage and family history. But watching the documentary Prophet’s Prey was absolutely horrifying (for one thing didn’t know about the school where Warren Jeffs molested the students). I share ancestry with one of the FLDS families back about 4-5 generations, which feels like blood contamination.

No no, when you’re white and FLDS, it’s called “Bleeding the beast”. If the government won’t recognize wives 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 as your wives, have them fill out paperwork as single mothers to take Uncle Sam’s money to support your kids.

Now imagine that face on the run. Like, literally running through a field, bobbing atop his rumpled polo shirt, jowls a’bobbin’, looking anxiously behind him for the police dogs bounding after him. Isn’t it grand?
