All I can think of when I see concert videos

Add to that “Shut up! I didn’t come here to hear you sing”

“Get festival ticket if you wanna stand! I buy tribune to sit and listen.”

and just in case fyi, in my place “Festival ticket” is ticket for no-seat/standing next to stage, while tribune is the seated ticket usually on the side of stage or far back.

I’m right there with you. Which is why (barring a Pink Floyd reunion, which is never gonna happen) I don’t go to concerts.

Even her tears are pretty. Girl damn.

Yes boo, the Navy go hard for you. I have videos from AWT Brooklyn concert that I can’t show because I’m singing/wailing/screaming like a banshee.

How on earth do people speak/sing while crying? Is this a thing you can get good at? I could use that skill as I cry for no reason (though oddly not generally when there actually is a reason. My mechanisms are broken)

You can’t, really. You have to get it together enough to carry on and try not to completely break down. Which is what my girl did :)

I know this makes me some kind of Bad Person, but I just cannot get into Rihanna’s music. Her songs are so repetitive and her voice barely modulates. Girl can sing, but girl cannot apparently hire someone with a decent ear for hooks. But everyone loves her! What am I missing??

I’m right there with you, except for the ‘girl can sing’ part. I tried to listen to her at the behest of a friend (“...what do you mean you’ve never heard Rihanna?! OMG she’s soooo great you’ll love her! Here, listen!”), and I just couldn’t deal with her voice. I was actually shocked at how terrible it was, because I had heard from a few other people that she had a great voice. I guess people are comparing her to some of the other shite playing on the top 40 station* maybe? I dunno, but it was baaaad. It was like she was trying to bottom out or something. Not that I could really tell what she sounded like under all the production! Like, I get that lots of pop-type performers are soaked in autotune nowadays (I think many of them have grown up with it at this point and don’t realize that music can sound another way — get off my lawn with all that soundalike tripe, younguns!), but it was so bad that I could barely differentiate the instruments, and her voice was just buried in this awful mix. I let my friend play me three songs, and then my headache was just too much.

Also, I agree with you about the lack of hooks. I seriously cannot remember note one, which is quite unusual for me. As soon as my friend stopped the music, it was as though it had never been played. The ‘melody’ of each song just kinda washed over me and left no real impression other than a vague distaste.

Sorry, Riri, I tried. We can still hang out and smoke a nice spliff, though. Just let me pick the music.

*Is there still such a thing as a top-40 station? Or am I showing my age and supposedly-concomitant lack of cool again?

I really have no idea about Top 40 stations...my radio listening time is NPR and otherwise I’ve got an Apple Music playlist for dancing with my kids.

I think the WORST for me is the one where she’s telling the guy it’s over now, get your stuff off my lawn, etc etc and IT’S ALL THE SAME NOTES OVER AND OVER AGAIN. That is not a song. That is a plaintive schoolyard chant.

As someone who has been writing and playing music for many years, I don’t really see what’s such a ‘trip’ about a performer having an occasional reaction to a song. Yes, we often play the same shit (especially on tour, when set lists can be fixed in advance and everyone wants to hear the singles), but we’re still human, and circumstances in our lives can suddenly hit from out of nowhere. I’ve surprised myself more than once by tearing up while singing a song that I’ve sung without incident hundreds of times before; depending on the song (and the level of emotional freefall happening), it’s not even always unwelcome. It’s weird to get jolted out of the sort of auto-pilot thing that can happen when playing a song has become rote, but sometimes it’s exactly what is needed at that moment. Or it is until the unstoppable snot rivulet drips into a wide-open singing mouth, anyway! Worst. Show. Ever.

That said, someone else is calling crocodile tears on this one, and as I can’t watch the video right now, I have no opinion one way or the other. Really though: so what if the tears are faked? Performers do that too when it fits — that’s the ‘performance’ part.

You're a survivor, Robyn. I love you, girl. You did it.
