There’s been a LOT of academic literature about geospatial technologies being a tool of the state, particularly for suppression or mis-representation. I think we (meaning geography wonks) could do a better job of highlighting how the technology can be used for counter-authoritative purposes and actually be used to leverage greater power in social structures. Technology is (mostly) value neutral.

Jim/James Scott’s ‘Seeing Like a State’ is a great one, coming from the Anthropology side of things.

In Ireland, if a woman becomes pregnant by rape and aborts the child she faces more prison time than her rapist.

I love my country but I know as a woman I am constitutionally of the same value as a foetus. The situation makes me profoundly sad.

ETA: I don’t think my comment is directly relevant to these (excellent) events in NI but abortion laws in Ireland are a daily topic of thought for me that it just gives me existential sadness.

Technically you’re less. They let Savita and other women die rather than abort, after all.

In Ireland, if a woman becomes pregnant by rape and aborts the child she faces more prison time than her rapist.

Really just drives home the true nature of anti-abortionists. They don’t want women to be in control of their own lives. In order for a religious oligarchy to remain in power, there have to be more disenfranchised people at the bottom. To stop unhappy people from constantly revolting, a good trick is to give them someone they can exert power over/take their aggression out on. Men get women. Women get children. Pretty common cycle of abuse. If women had the choice to extract themselves from men or break out of the cycle of poverty sustained by forced births, then they might have opportunities for other things. And if women break out, so do men. Since they no longer have to care for children they might not have wanted either. And of course, the children don’t have to be born into hostile situations and grow up in that sort of environment.

Oh in practice yes, 100%, women are worth less than a foetus in this country. But in addition, it’s written into the constitution. The fucking constitution. Conservatives in this country fight for that 8th amendment as fiercely as right wingers and gun nuts do the second amendment in the US. But they're all about protecting the sanctity of life so long as they deem it the right life. I'm just fed up.

Pay attention, America. If we’re not careful, we’ll soon be begging for abortion drones from Canada.

Seriously. My first thought was to wonder whether we could start having drones fly these pills into Texas, too.

Slightly off topic but it is incredible to me how the Catholic Church, or any Christian religion, uses the term “created in His image” to oppose abortion. Meaning that the fetus was formed exactly how God intended and by aborting it you are destroying the very being he created. Okay, so that fetus must be protected because it was formed how God wanted. Now tell me again how you rationalize your hatred of gay people then? If all fetuses are “created in His image”, shouldn’t you embrace ALL his images? I mean, if life is so important to these people in the first place and not just some ridiculous crutch they use to hide their real motivations that is.

They justify homophobia by claiming gays choose to be gay because they are immoral.

Of course they say that and yet since they are such adherents to the Bible they should know that giving human beings the brain function to make choices was also “created in His image”. They either believe in that and apply it to all or they don’t. Their hypocrisy is staggering and they need to stop hiding behind their religious bullshit. The very book they claim to cherish so much doesn’t support their ideology.

Speaking of anti-abortion laws, I was really surprised, that Jezebel didn´t write about current Polish anti-abortion crusade and huge public backslash against it.

I tried to mention it in many of my posts but - with me being in the grays - whatever I say does not attract much attention, if any.

A recent case of a tween seeking abortion after getting raped by her two cousins and becoming pregnant draw serious opposition from the conservatives, who tried to convince the general public that the kid ( accorning to them, a “young woman”) will get traumatized by getting abortion, that carrying the fetus to full term is what god wanted, that the poor baby did not do anything wrong, and did not deserve to die. The “baby” they referred to was the fetus, not the victim.

It’s a good stunt and I hope it brings more awareness, but unfortunately it’s really only that and a woman receiving these pills by drone could still be charged and convicted under the Offenses Against the Person Act and even imprisoned.

In Northern Ireland, abortion is illegal except when the mother’s life is at risk.

If we are going to define the women by their relationship to a fetus can we at least be more accurate and call them the incubators? “In Northern Ireland, abortion is illegal except when the incubator’s life is at risk.”

Seriously, this is the type of action that has a direct, positive result. I’m a monthly Planned Parenthood donor, but it sometimes feels like I’m throwing a rock in the ocean. Donate to this group, they are providing a concrete service that gives a giant middle finger to religious oppressive assholes.
