Gah. I hope she’s all right and it was just a one-off bad reaction to the combo of wine and pills. How scary for the kid too, damn.

Do people make stuff up like that just because of pills and alcohol, I wonder? Or was she freed from whatever inhibitions kept her from disclosing the abuse? Either way, how awful for it all to happen so publicly.

No idea, maybe it’s stuff that’s really happening to her or maybe she dissociated or something. I don’t know what she took but I had a mild delusional freakout once after 2 glasses of Pinot Noir and an Ambien. Fortunately for me I was in my apartment with my then-roommate at the time, and not on an airplane. If she does need help, this incident will hopefully be the catalyst for her to get it.

I know: I LOVE NURSES. My sister is a nurse and she is fucking awesome.

Once we were in a coffee shop and had just sat down with our lattes. All of a sudden a woman started freaking out and crying and raging. Being the chicken shit I am, I said, “Jesus, quick—let’s go.”

My sister slowly turned to the scene and calmly got up and walked over to the woman. She got her to sit down and then slowly squatted down lower than the woman and took her hands in her hands and started talking to her in a calm, low voice to get her to calm down. She found out who to call, what her medications were, etc., etc. She told the barrista who to call and what to do (get her a water, etc.). I was SO FUCKING PROUD (and ashamed of myself for wanting to escape before anything uncomfortable happened).

And, ironically enough, my sis is known as the cold, hard bitch of the family. She is the boss.

I recall reading a blind item that the commenters were certain was her, having a similar freak-out in L.A. when her son was a baby. Poor kid might be one of the many growing up with an emotionally-ill parent. I mean, she's been rumoured to have been dating David Foster, who seems like an all-around Douche on the best of days. :(

Holy shit, I hope she's okay and that whatever allegations she made get to be investigated instead of dismissed. My heart broke to think of her 4 year-old seeing his mom taken on a stretcher, no kid needs to see that.

I hope the police take her more seriously than the jezebel commentariat. They seem to have all decided that 1. The prescription medication was ambien 2. She's not being abused, she just said those things because of ambien

This could be incredibly shallow and impertinent of me, but I’ll never forget a Daily Mail story titled “Shockingly thin Selma Blair displays her skeletal figure as she takes son to the park.” Her “skeletal frame” was the tabloid story, but I was really alarmed by the outfit she wore, in the context she wore it, in concert with her physical appearance. Basically a chunky cardigan with nothing underneath, the kind of socially inappropriate outfit that someone incompetent (alcohol, drugs, mental illness) would pick out for herself. If you’re curious, check it out; I don’t believe I’m out-of-line for saying those photos raised some very upsetting alarm bells.

I’m not trying to shame Selma for an outfit she wore in 2012. But ever since those photos (which actually worried me, as someone who likes her) I’ve projected some vague concern onto her...sad that four years later she’s in this situation. No clue what’s going on behind closed doors but I hope she gets the help she needs.

Yes. I try not to be a concern troll, because it’s useless and judgmental. But I will say this much - I saw those pictures four years ago and I remember them still. Even though a fuckload of paparazzi pictures have entered my brain since then.

This hits a little close to home right now. A few days ago I was so severely dehydrated from a virus that I couldn’t stop breathing rapidly and had extremely low blood pressure so that I was in and out of awareness and would start to pass out every time I tried to stand up. My poor dad had to call 911. In one of my more aware moments, I told my kids to go to a bedroom, shut the door, and play video games, thankfully. But neighbors and all of the people passing through our busy intersection saw me carried on a stretcher into an ambulance. I can only imagine what kind of wacky stories they may have imagined in their heads. I worry that for some people, even if I tell them the fairly mundane reason for my medical emergency, they will still retain some level of suspicion about the possibility of some kind of more dramatic story.

A dad in my old neighborhood was taken away in an ambulance one night, and even though the couple explained that he had a fall or something, everybody was talking about whether it might have been alcohol related. To be fair, the man had a massive alcohol problem, as in reeked of it much of the time. But it still felt to me almost like people had a strong desire to believe their own version. Does it make people feel better about themselves to entertain these kinds of possibilities? Are we just bored?

Anyway, poor Selma. In addition to whatever problems she might actually be having, she is also going to be subjected to all kinds of speculation, because we just can’t help it. And even if it was a fairly random and uncharacteristic event, a certain percentage of people are going to have a hard time letting go of whatever more exciting explanations they imagined.

I’m surprised everyone seems so invested in the everything-is-fine theory. If you compare the incidence of one-off bizarre hallucinogenic outbursts to the incidences of addiction, mental illness, spousal abuse, and any other more statistically probable triggering causes, I’m certain these everything-is-fine theories don’t hold up so likely.

Take this “Ambien” theory—10 million Americans take sleeping pills. A fraction of those Americans take Ambien. A tiny sliver of Ambien users experience side effects in broad daylight that resemble a psychotic episode.

I know it’s important to give the benefit of the doubt. But I’m actually disappointed in the number of people who:

      A) Are interpreting events to call this a big accident/misunderstanding.

      B) Aren’t giving her words in the moment (about abuse, etc.) any significant pause or attention.

      C) Are treating concerns about addiction/mental illness/abuse as if they somehow impugn her character—So what if she needs help? Perhaps she needs help!

      D) Seem unwilling to believe that something deeper is afoot here.
