Peter Thiel may be terrible, but he didn’t do this to Gawker. Gawker hung themselves. Peter Thiel just paid for the rope.

Yeah, gotta agree. These articles here on this site only serve to make me more amazed that all this came about because someone thought posting a video of a washed-up wrestler fucking some guy’s wife was vital.

Give it a rest. You did something stupid and got sued. Who cares who paid for it? If Thiel hadn't bankrolled it are you saying you would have won? Or settled for a small amount?

This is an explainer post on the chapter 11 that doesn’t editorialize in the slightest about the past, and it is written by a guy who doesn’t even work for Gawker.

But I guess I shouldn’t be shocked that someone who spends his time with his face metaphorically shoved in a billionaire’s ass can’t understand the difference between an attack on Thiel and a fairly mundane rundown of a legal process.

The only thing more tiresome than Denton’s mealymouthed excuses are these Hot Takes insisting, somehow, that only one party in this shit show are assholes. Hey guys: all sides are petty and have made piss-poor ethical decisions- It’s assholes all the way down.

One thing not discussed here was what happens if the Hogan verdict is either overturned or massively reduced.

Also, Do you have any views on whether or not Gawker.com itself will wind up, as it appears to have been in Ziff Davis’ offer, hived off from the rest of the properties?

In order to appeal, Florida law requires they put up half the judgement money up front. Gawker doesn’t have $50+ million dollars to continue fighting the case.

I find it really odd that all of the posts about Gawker’s bankruptcy/Peter Thiel/Hulk Hogan have so many posters joyously slamming Gawker and celebrating its demise. Whether or not you agreed with the Hogan posts, why would people who seemingly detest Gawker with every fibre of their being also be regular readers and commenters here? Just trolls? Paid plants? Sad people who don’t realize they have a finite amount of time on earth?

I know that in my case, I’m required to sit at my desk for a certain amount of time each day or they’ll stop paying me. This place is good for time wasting.

Sadly, Gawker was always going to struggle against the sort of evil who likes to smugly play five simultaneous games of speed chess against himself

But there are constants to this process, things that Gawker can expect as a baseline. We should talk about them.

    Must we?

Long time Gawker commenter, also former finance attorney here (including some workouts/pre-bankruptcy). And yet somehow I don’t care about this.

    Do people care about this?

As a not former finance attorney and Gawker reader who has never dealt with bankruptcy or had friends or family who have filed for bankruptcy, I find it interesting.

Love Gawker and all, but isn’t Nick Denton worth hundreds of millions?? Or at least worth 10's of millions? In other words....isn’t he mega-rich?

They keep playing the “look what a Billionaire did to us” card....but to me, this is just rich people fighting in court. Gawker obviously did something they shouldn’t have and paid a fair price IMO (especially since it will be reduced). It’s just weird to see this play out as a rich persons vindictive agenda, when the head of Gawker is a rich person with a vindictive agenda. At least it sure seems that way sometimes.

    It’s the 1% fighting the 0.10%.

Oh I agree with that 100%. I’m definitely not trying to suggest they are of the same moral fiber, by any stretch. Just pointing out this is hardly a David vs Goliath like they are obviously trying to make it out to be.

Denton had plenty of cash to fight this lawsuit. They lost because they were wrong, not because of a billionaire helping the other side out. It’s just strange they’re still trying to push that narrative.

I read the title wrong. Thought Gawker had launched a plan to bankrupt the entire media and that you were going to detail the plan. That sounded like a good idea.

    I am disappoint.

So long as the old and derided print media this site mocked for so long doesn’t survive its Ramsay Bolton-esque bastard, Gawker. That would be too much to bear.

“a media company declaring itself bankrupt, however, is pretty much a commonplace.”
