    Someone posted this on GT yesterday, and I’m still reeling.

    I googled the parents’ names to try to find out more information, and the first thing that came up after the recent articles about the father selling his 14-year-daughter into sexual slavery was that he runs a puppy mill.

    It’s not like there was any doubt that he’s a complete and utter travesty of a human being based on this case alone, but apparently he's an animal abusing asshole on top of that.

      I’m guessing the puppy mill and the underage sex slaves things are related. As is almost always the case with serial killers, they start abusing animals first. I think it’s to test the waters, to see if anyone is keeping track, before they move on human victims.

    This shit used to be not only legal, but the norm not too long ago, in the grand scheme of things.

    I repeat: LEGAL AND NORMAL to treat your own daughter like a commodity to be sold off. Like livestock. That blows my fucking mind.

    I’m glad authorities are taking this seriously now, and that (especially young) women are now allowed to have agency over their lives.

    Good for the neighbor lady for calling the cops.

      There is a family on my street. All young girls, their big loud mouthed mom and a dad nearly everyone had seen hit their dogs. Six dogs, give or take, they run away a lot. Those kids... I’ve seen the oldest hit those dogs, too. When one chased me she told me to hit it with a stick. She’s maybe eleven. Those kids... I tell ya. They look sad. There is this sadness and then anger in their eyes. But I’ve never seen anything. I just know, you know?

      But I don’t think it’s like they were sold to the guy and they are his trapped sex-slaves, just abuse. I think. But now..?

      What can you do? No one expects THIS to be what's happening in their neighborhood. We should cheer on that they did call, that they saved those girls by saying something. People go their whole lives and don't even see the people around them, nevermind act to save them.

      Apparently 2 of there children are living at there grandparents. So assuming their are actually records of the all of the children it seems like they just beat the odds and had almost all girls.

      ETA: Though other articles also say that the kids had no birth certificates or SS numbers. So ...

    Thank you Aimee for not focusing on the financial side of this story. I’ve read coverage of this from several outlets and they all spend five paragraphs discussing how the parents only sold their daughter because of their financial difficulties at the hands of the Amish church. As if that makes this somehow understandable or less disgusting.

    How would this story be covered by the main stream if these parents were people of color?

      It is a part of the story in the same way that gendered infantacide is part economics and culture where it occurs. Divorcing what these girls survived from the backward American faith that allowed it to happen would be a disservice. The Amish want to “pretend” it's the 1700s, and that's not all hand-ground flour and apple pie.
