Could Zoe not have made any recommendations? I don’t believe that no one would have done it had she not “stepped up”.

She may have been the main/only reason that financing fell into place.

“I’d love to be in your movie, but you know, I’m just not black enough. Here’s a list of much blacker people you can call.”

Who, in your opinion, is black “enough” to portray Nina Simone?

Listen, aside from personal safety considerations, I think a phone breakup over a 15 months-long relationship is a dick move. But I don’t like Adam “Calvin Harris” Wiles, either, so...

    TL;DR meh

I apparently have a hierarchy for breakups! In person > Phoning > Texting > Ghosting > Cheating. With factors for length/strength of relationship and personal safety.

But yes, agreed, texting < phone call!

I think Zoe should maybe never open her mouth on this subject again. It’s like she’s got a shovel and she wants to keep digging deeper and deeper...

She went from denying she is black - going so far as to “educate” an interviewer who asked her what she identified as that ‘To me there is no such thing as people of color cause in reality people aren’t white. Paper is white. People are pink’

    Girl. No.

Also - Nina Simone was famous before your stupid movie. And yes - you should have left that movie alone.

Ugh. Yes. I feel a pretty put-off by the fact that she thinks no one knew who Nina Simone was before this mess of a movie came out. That’s just an insult to the massive waves that amazing woman made in her lifetime and after.

Next she should play Rosa Parks. You know, so people can finally learn who she is, all thanks to Zoe Saldana!

The LA Mansion for Bey and Jay-Z... How does any house need twice as many bathrooms as bedrooms? What are the odds of 20 people needing to go to the toilet at the same time unless you serve laxatives for dessert every night?

As a person with IBS sharing a 1-bedroom apartment with her boyfriend, I would LOVE to have twice as many bathrooms as bedrooms. But 20 does seem a bit excessive.

“I never saw her as unattractive. Nina looks like half my family!” she says. “But if you think the [prosthetic] nose I wore was unattractive, then maybe you need to ask yourself, ‘What do you consider beautiful? Do you consider a thinner nose beautiful, so the wider you get, the more insulted you become?’”

    No.

this woman is so dumb! I don’t remember anybody being mad she had a prosthetic nose because it was ugly? people were mad because the fake nose and the darker shade of makeup was proof she was not right for the role.... she is trying to change goal post into a defense of balck beauty now? GTFOH...

“The fact that we’re talking about her, that Nina Simone is trending? We [f–king] won,” Saldana stated. “For so many years, nobody knew who the [f–k] she was”

Wow. The delusion is strong in this one. Is this what happens when you’re surrounded by people that only tell you what you want to hear, that withhold the truth from you at your own cost?

Saldana is the final dot of an ellipses, in a chapter discarded for its uselessness, in the grand narrative Simone’s life story. How dare she?

“For so many years, nobody knew who the [f–k] she was”

I knew who Nina Simone was long before I ever heard of Zoe Saldana - and I’m a white man from Germany, far removed from the struggles of African Americans and the importance of Nina and her music for their community. If I can “get it” and understand why this was a bad career decision that fucked up a project that was important to a lot of people, she really should be able to “get it”, too.

My google search currently delivers 7.9 million hits when searching for “Nina Simone” and just 3 million hits when searching for “Zoe Saldana”.

Sounds to me like she is overestimating her own reach - and underestimating Nina’s. I doubt anyone will remember who Zoe Saldana was in thirty or fourty years, but people will still listen to timeless classics like “Just in time” and “Feeling good”, people will still remember Nina Simone.

Please. Don’t even give her the credit of being surrounded by sycophants. Saldana is nowhere near being famous enough to have an entourage to insulate her from reality. No one goes to see any movie for her sake, so she’s certainly not an A-lister. She’s delusional. Period.

    What. The. Fuck.

Saldana is delusional. If anything got Nina Simone ‘trending’, it’s the documentary, not that shitty film. ‘Nobody knew who the fuck she was.’ I mean - seriously. The woman is a legend. Keep talking Saldana, and digging your own professional grave.

She is such a moron. Just because you discovered you were Black 5 minutes ago after years of giving mush-mouthed “I don’t see color!” interviews, doesn’t mean the rest of us didn’t love and cherish our Black icons and didn’t want to see them honored by something better than your embarrassing orangeface tepid flop of a movie.

“She is essential to our American history. As a woman first, and only then as everything else.”

Annnnnnnd further proof she didn’t get it. Nina Simone put her blackness first. It wasn’t just her identity, it was the basis of her music, her politics, etc.

You mean to tell me that she had enough clout to get the story told but not enough to get the casting “right”? She wanted the role for herself and failed.

So about the whole Zoe Saldana thing, I understand it might be different for African Americans, but I’m an indigenous Australian, which is a recessive gene. In my country it’s a persistent racial issue of ‘half casts’ getting the short end of the stick, in that we don’t ‘look’ black enough to fit into our communities, and unfortunately if we do well at school we don’t ‘act’ black enough, etc. On the other hand we’re clearly not white, so we don’t look white enough to fit in as a white kid. What I’m saying is this whole blow up seemed like the absolute hight of fucking racism to everyone outside of the american continent. Good grief. Look at you all... The major criticism was that she didn’t ‘look black enough’... what the fuck!

Colorism is an international issue, so if you don't get it, that's a personal problem, not an American one.

Literally no one thinks zoe doesn’t look black enough. Thats an argument she created in her own head so she can be proved right. If you don’t understand the problem with Zoe being cast as Nina you need to read brief wikis on both the history of Ninas life and the history of America.
