I read this story earlier this week and it’s a true WTF. I am amazed at the amount of wiggling everyone is doing to deflect blame. Apparently the principal was shocked that the mother was taking her daughter to the ER. Also, I’ve gotten accidental rope burns before but never from simply being hit by a rope and always on my hands.

Yeah the schools always do this with a lawsuit but wtf were they thinking 1) It was an accident at the time 2) Vaseline and call it a day? What?

no one helped her to her feet.

Although there are many disturbing aspects to this story this line speaks volumes. When a child is hurt and on the ground, the immediate knee jerk reaction of any adult present is usually to go to them. Also, if it was an accident, the other kids would have immediately helped her. This poor girl.

A rope being released from tension doing this? On her neck? I don’t fucking think so.

Yeah. You need friction to cause rope burn (I’ve suffered enought of it to know). A rope being released from tension might leave a bruise, but that’s it. These people aren’t just racist, greedy assholes trying to protect themselves from a lawsuit, they’re also really incompetent at first aid and rope safety.

    Holy fuck!

As soon as that happened, the school should have called the parents and told them what happened to decided if she needed further medical treatment. Even if it was an “accident” the adults on duty should have been calling admin and the parents. Frankly, it doesn't surprise me if this was a bullying incident.

it definitely was a bullying incident...ugh it breaks my heart. They had to WORK to injure her that much....she was probably so scared...and none of the adults helped her...

This school better fucking pay for this. They are complete assholes for not handling this properly...or handling the racist bullshit the girl was probably dealing with since day one...

That’s what I thought too. Because I am on my little brothers emergency contact list, I was contacted after he received a papercut in art a few years ago. Certainly rope burn should be worthy of a phone call. This is tragic and confirmation to me why I’m going to continue home schooling my children.

In another article I read, the principal said the kids were playing around as kids do and a boy nudged the back of her leg, which caused her to fall (we all remember how funny that was) and the rope ended up around her neck and tightened. It was all a big misunderstanding, just kids will be kids. This rope whipping by and hitting her is a new story. But it's from the lawyer this time. I wish I could remember where I read about this first, it was a few days ago.

I hope she gets every penny she is suing for! I am so sick of things happening to black children that are deemed accidents. She was attacked. That picture above that’s her neck after some healing this is it before

Her mother thought she had a necklace on her neck when she got off the fucking bus. No one from the school called and told her mother that she had been hurt. They are all assholes that school deserves this

Lawrence L. Germer, the owner of the property where the students went on the trip and a defendant in the suit, said, “From any perspective, it’s sad because the little girl got hurt.” But he added that her injuries were the result of “terrible, bad luck” and that the lawsuit misrepresented what had happened.

Mr. Germer, who is also a lawyer and says his daughter is a dean at the Live Oak school, said that he had hosted Boy Scouts and church groups at his property before without incident.

The swing remains in place, he said.

      True.

I’ll also add that while my comment reads as flip, the story is truly horrifying and the amount of disconnect and backpedaling on everyone’s part is staggering here.

      Poor little girl.

When I was a kid, my family (Air Force) was stationed in Oklahoma. I was the only non-white kid in my entire school. Every day, the other kids used to throw rocks at me during recess until one day the school suddenly “discovered” this program for gifted students, and the next thing I knew I was getting shuttled to a special school every day. Although I didn’t understand racism at the time (this was like 2nd or 3rd grade), I did notice that all my fellow students at this gifted school were all kids of color.

For me, my dad was black, my mum was white, and I was brown. I just assumed people were like crayons, that we all came in different colors. It wasn’t until many, many years later that I realized the reason those kids were attacking me every day was because of my skin color.

That’s one way to deal with it, I suppose? I can’t decide if I think the segregation was protective, because the school realized it couldn’t stop its student body’s overwhelming racism, or just plain old racist segregation on their part too. No telling, I guess.

How were the classes at the “gifted” school? Did you feel like you learned more? I mean I realize that part of it might not be the clearest memory at this late date... but it’d be cool if at least you benefited in some way.

ugh that’s disturbing but I get it. In elementary school I got bullied worse than anyone else. I always thought it was because I was fat, but when I look back on it I was the only not totally white girl, with kinky short curly black hair among a sea of shades of blonde. My dad is white and my mom is a very dark Puerto Rican. Even my teacher was a total asshole to me.
