There is only one country “in the region” where any kind of pride event can be held without the government or angry mob cracking down on their fellow citizens: Israel.

And it will remain that way in the foreseeable future. With the shift from Kemalism to an autocracy/theocracy in Turkey, things are bound to get worse for LGBT citizens over there, just like for anyone else who doesn’t approve of dear leader Erdolf’s turn back to the 19th century.

My friend went to Tel Aviv Pride last year! She’s been studying in Europe for the past few years and tries to go to a new city’s pride every year haha.

Also thanks but no thanks tbh kemalism itself sets up an environment of idol worship and the ultra nationalism deemed normal for secular Turks.....kemalism is what sets up an environment that encourages hate for anything that threatens Turkishness including the mere existence of nonturks...which normalizes the military attacks the government has been conducting against civilians, he'll against WHOLE TOWNS IN THE SOUTHEAST OF TURKEY. Creating a dichotomy of islamism/kemalism obscures the reality of increasing violence and internal tensions in turkey. Ultra nationalist groups like the mhp while not gaining traction themselves are seeing their ideologies more popular than ever as kemalist Turks ignore the ethnic cleansing taken out by the govt

There’s been at least two suicide/car bombs in Istanbul and Ankara this year, probably more but I can’t remember.

Most (if not all) were carried out by the TAK, a more extreme splinter group of the PKK that targeted mainly police and military (but the TAK doesn’t care about civilian casualties beyond warning tourists to stay away from Turkey). A Pride parade wouldn’t be a target for them. ISIS, ISIS sympathizers, and violent bigots in general, however...

I was concerned that TAK/PKK extremists - and more likely ISIS - would love the opportunity of a huge crowd to attack. I know TAK targets military outposts but the Ankara bombing was mostly civilians no?

I honestly have not been following this as closely as I should. I have such conflicted feeling about Erdogan and my twitter timeline is filled with pictures of Syrian kids dying from barrel bombs that I am over-saturated with it. Commence guilt spiral.

From what I understand, in Turkish oil wrestling a competitor wins when he successfully gets his hand down the opponent’s pants. Not too gay now is it. And for the record, oil wrestling is hotter to watch than some gay porn.

Sometimes I wonder: if holy books say to “love gay people”, would the followers actually do that, or would they just find some other excuse to hate them?

Didn’t Jesus say ‘love thy neighbour’? I think that covers it.

Well, the big holy book specifically says “Thou shall not kill” and people immediately began applying caveats to that. Then later it says, “hey dudes, the greatest commandment is love.” And then people immediately ignored that. So, if "true believers" are going to ignore the pretty specific and unambiguous words of their deities, then I imagine they're just going to do what they want.

Personally I wouldn’t mind some benevolent alien race like the Vulcans (Star Trek), Klaatu (The Day The Earth Stood Still) or Overlords (Childhood’s End) to show up and basically declare “that’s it, either hand over the WMD, or be destroyed”.

We could really use some help with the children down here.

Being able to have Pride is so important. Being able to be in a place with other people like is important.

Don’t be fooled! This has more to do with Erdogan being a dictator who supports Islamic law, consolidating his power over a once-secular nation, (the fact that it is still Ramadan...) than it does with any kind of concern for LGBTQ safety.

Sincerely thank you for reporting on this. Istanbul pride is such a lovely atmosphere when it's allowed to take place. I was at the last one (in 2014) and could not imagine not having it for years to come 😭
