I in no way want to detract from the absolute horror of this event...but it is not the biggest mass shooting in US history. It’s not. Saying it is erases events like Wounded Knee and countless other examples of (almost exclusively) POC being massacred, usually with the tacit permission if not active participation of the military or a police force.
This might be the largest single-shooter massacre, the largest massacre in modern US history. But I feel like we’re ignoring the context of violence in American history in order to sensationalize the deaths of dozens of people, at the cost of erasing others.

I’m sorry but yes, yes you are trying to detract from the absolute horror of this event. What you’re suggesting is that the naming/recognition of the events as unique in a way detracts from others like it or in the same vein and that is just NOT true.

Every event that you have mentioned is important and deserves recognition, processing and an attempt for us to collectively do better, or in some cases own up to the underlying issues we as a society allow to go on.

But that’s not something we can do when we constantly fight about which is more deserving, which was “worse”.

How is that not true? Labelling something a specific way assigns it value and weight, giving words like “biggest mass shooting” implies something like this has never happened before, and it has! Giving the Pulse murders context around how the US treats POC is absolutely vital to understanding how bigotry impacts violent actions in this country.

If someone said that Columbine was the deadliest school shooting in history, it would erase Sandy Hook, right? Words have specific, intentional meanings and the context is freaking important.

It’s nice that she wrote a song whose proceeds go to the massacre. I still thinks she sucks.

There’s nothing to spill- her music sucks for itself. Although, there was a time where there were very few lesbian role models and I guess having her around was good, in a way. 14 year old me promised myself to be the opposite of her. She wasn’t even good enough to be a place holder until I found Riot Girl, then Ani (I know, fauxbian but her lyrics spoke to my soul)...Le Tigre, early T&S...etc. Her personal drama annoyed me as well.

I’m really trying not to rant but she just bugs me to the core.

This is awesome. Really, no sarcasm. THIS IS AWESOME.

I just want to know how she wrote a song on Sunday and it is released already on Thursday and I had to wait a fucktillion years for Rihanna’s album? Someone fix this obviously broken system.

that’s how the music industry used to work. when the Kent State shooting happened, Neil Young wrote “Ohio” a day or two later and had it out within a week.

That song gives me the chills. I heard it and wanted to read about it. That is advocacy through music.

This is awesome. Having something expressive and affirming to hold on to for support and that can speak when you don’t always have the words is such a comforting thing. I’m glad that she followed her instinct to write and release this song.

Side note, her voice has aged so beautifully.

I’ve been a fan for years. It will forever bother me that I know people that considered Katy Perry to be a big step for LGBTQ that didn’t know “Come to My Window.”

I am a heterosexual, white, cisgender male and (with the possible exception of Clapton breaking down in tears playing “Tears in Heaven”) I have never been more moved than Melissa singing “I don’t care what they think. I don’t care what they say. What do they know about this love anyway?”

I just want to say that if you’re hurting, reach out. I’ve been really shaken by this on and off all week and I went to a vigil tonight and it really helped. Being around a bunch of people who are also angry, also scared, also devastated, also defiant - I feel a bit better. I got to cry with them and it was good. Try it, if you're feeling alone in this. You aren't.

All day long I've been in an argument with someone about gun control and better gun reform against automatic weapons and all day long they have been telling me I'm focused on the wrong problem. That I need to be focused on ISIS and terrorism and fight that. I'm just here to say We CAN SOLVE MANY PROBLEMS AT ONCE. It isn't either or right or wrong we can face and challenge all that is wrong with us. Good healing song Melissa Ethridge. Tonight I went to a peace vigil and a lot of people showed up. Gives me hope. #Revengeofthegreys
