This is my pet peeve. It already exists as something. Why does it need to be a movie also? Give those movie dollars to something original!

Nothing was worse than The Producers being made into a broadway show and then a movie based on the broadway show based on the original movie.

Some people can’t afford to see a live adaptation in New York or LA, so this is an affordable option. The last time I saw Wicked in LA, tickets were still going for $500 off ebay. Lucky for me, I ordered my tickets way in advance and scored a pretty sweet deal of $95.

This makes sense. I sometimes forget my NY privilege and need to be reminded. The Producers thing still bothers me though :)

    Happy Almost Friday folks,

What’s on your Musicals/Showtune Favourites playlist?

I’ve had “Don’t Rain on my Parade” from Funny Girl stuck in my head all week

If You Knew My Story from Bright Star. It’s been on a loop in my head since the Tony’s and I’m okay with that.

In the Heights is on repeat for me at work. I’ve also been listening to Waitress which is actually really good.

But can we get the book instead? Book is better/more interesting.

Agreed. I am actually not a particular fan of Wicked the musical. Not really into the music, but Wicked the book (and the various sequels) was pretty great.

At one point I heard that Salma Hayek had optioned it and wanted to do an HBO mini series based on the book. And I thought that was spectacular. I wonder what happened to that?

Unfortunately, they weren’t able to get this off the ground before the advent ofHamilton, and so every single article following even the most minor development will include the question: “But what about the Hamilton movie?”

Anyone who says that needs to shut the fuck up and read the goddamn news.

While I’m SO PUMPED for this, it’s my understanding that they’re filming the play, which to me is not the same as making a movie

True. I just get annoyed at people who want to turn everything into a movie immediately. JUST LET IT BE A MUSICAL FOR A MINUTE, PEOPLE!

Someone did a series of animated storyboards for “Defying Gravity” and ever since I have been wanting this adaptation to be animated.

I was once very cool in some circles for having seen the show with the original cast, way before it was popular.

Thanks to my uncle who is tbh an elitist jerk most of the time, but very up on Brodaway and very generous, I got to see Wicked and Hamilton with the original casts.

I saw the original cast as well. My other Wicked claim to fame is that I have seen the show 3 times, but none of them were times when I picked the show. It’s cute and has great music, but I will never see it live on stage again.

While I don’t think a movie will capture the same magic as the stage production, a movie is a lot more accessible and allows for more drunk me singing along

Just please god I hope they don’t do to it what they did to Les Mis. I really liked everything except goddamn Russell Crowe. Just that one really bad casting decision stood out like a turd in a punch bowl.

If this has been in development limbo for years now, I wonder if Idina Menzel’s skyrocketing popularity post-Frozen had anything to do with it finally going through. On a related note, I wonder if they will re-cast Idina, à la Rent, or if they will be total idiots and go with a younger actress.

I mean, I guess they could always go with Lea Michele, who is rather eerily similar to Idina not only because they’re both supremely talented musical theater actresses, but because they look like sisters and have that same distinctive ring to their voices. I suppose I could forgive them for that.

Idina will be 48 (and Kristin will be 50) when the movie comes out, so I’m sure that she will not be playing Elphaba.

The era of all my musical theater friends singing these songs nonstop just BARELY ended! Please, must it return so quickly? Will I never hear the end of “Popular?”

Haha, but I’m not mad. I’d actually totally see this, since I could never afford to see the musical live.

Also, off-topic, but: It’s my birthday! And so I’m going to shamelessly put a request out there to be formally ungreyed as a commenter. I’ve been a regular reader since the site’s inception, and a commenter since 2009 or 2010 (back when you had to “audition” to become a commenter). I’m not a troll, and I have at least a modicum of intelligence.

So, to those with the ability to bring me out of the grey forever, I ask: make today an awesome birthday for me?

If it makes you feel better it’s not coming out for 3.5 years so you have plenty of time to forgot about it and then by the time it premieres it will be enjoyable again.
