They’re already saying that in the (thankfully) still greyed portion of the Gawker comments section. I looked. Why did I look?

This is comparatively local to me, and it’s breaking my heart.

We have a house full of self-serving politicians, and we lose the one who spent her life working for charity, and campaigning for the rights of refugee children and the disabled.

I am so ashamed of this country. Our poisonous political rhetoric is creating fascist killers. “Britain First” is a terrorist group, and should be labelled as such.

    RIP Jo. x

Jayda Fransen, deputy leader of Britain First, said the party was “looking into the reports right now”. “We were extremely shocked to see these reports and we are keen to confirm them, because of course at the moment it is hearsay,” she said. “This has just been brought to our attention. This is absolutely not the kind of behaviour we would condone.”

So you wouldn’t condone murdering MP’s you disagree with? Gee, way to climb way out on a limb there, Jayda.

So sorry that this has happened and that it’s close to home for you x

It looks like this nationalistic wave is hitting the globe in a big way right now (we have Trump) because people seem to forget the historical consequences behind this rhetoric and these actions. It’s getting more vocal, rabid and dangerous.

As someone who has been hearing a lot about a potential Brexit over the past couple weeks, I actually spent yesterday evening educating myself on the issue. I figured I would probably fall pretty handily on the “Remain” side, but I figure I probably shouldn’t assume without reading up... my instinct was right. And now this is a pretty solid confirmation that, “Yeah, I don’t want to be on the side of assholes who would do this.”

Instead of educating myself on the issues, I saw JK Rowling tweeted #StrongerIn, so I support GB staying in the EU.

Note: I’m an American and my opinion doesn’t matter.

This makes me so afraid for our awesome progressive female politicians. Good to know that male fragility and racism is a threat to even elected politicians.

    And her kids! She had little kids, you fucker! ;;;_;;;

I guess I can see the male element to a point but I’m missing the race angle. Is she not white or is there some aspect of race in the debate about breaking away or staying in the EU?

Staying in the EU makes it easier for immigrants to come to the UK, as I understand. So yes, there is some aspect of race there. Nationalism, xenophobia, and racism are very closely linked.

It’s a rigorous debate right now and will be voted on next week, so it’s not exactly coming out of the blue but... yeah, it’s awful.

He’s trying to underline the point that immigrants are the ones who pose a violent threat to society.

I started crying at my desk when I read this. There is no place a woman is safe. Jo Cox was literally just standing on a public street, outside a library.

She was a strong advocate for women within the Labour Party and I hope that’s how we remember her, not how she died. I hope her husband and children can take some comfort in the short but powerful legacy she left behind.

And anyone who says this is a political murder that has nothing to do with her gender, can fuck right off. I didn’t see his psycho going after David Cameron or even Eddie Izzard. He picked Jo for a reason and that reason is that she’s a woman.

This is utterly shocking and devastating. She was doing the most mundane of an MP’s duties, her constituency surgery. Here is her maiden speech, which ends with “I’m proud that I was made in Yorkshire, and I’m proud of the things we make in Yorkshire.”:

Is it typical for all MPs to host regular meetings for their constituents? I was guessing from context that this is something similar to what we would call a “town hall” here (American asking). The fact that a politician would regularly meet with her constituents to address their concerns boggles my mind; that shit only happens here in an election season, and only in close contests (I live in a red state, so never).

My thoughts go out to her family, friends, and constituents, about whom is seems she really cared. Awful, awful stuff.

Oh yes, most MPs have constituency surgeries once a week. http://www.parliament.uk/site-informati... Politics are very local in the UK.

It’s really horrible. In some ways it reminds me of the assassination of Olof Palme, the Swedish PM, in 1986.

This is fucking heartbreaking. I hope that it wasn’t a Brexiter/Britain First supporter. They may be ignorant xenophobes but I really hope they haven’t stooped this low. :’( Edit: We don’t have enough information yet to know if the reports of his shouting are accurate. I will not be surprised if they are but I hope they aren't.

Apparently there are at least three seperate witnesses saying that the guy was yelling “Britain First” so sadly this probably was a political murder.
