What is the risk that the casino brings in scabs or just hire new employees? Are they even allowed to legally do so in New Jersey? My knowledge of union labor and contracts is pretty much non-existent.

They’re not allowed to but, really, the casinos in AC are pretty much all failing. And if the referendum to expand gambling in northern NJ passes, the whole thing is going to collapse.

This whole situation is sad. This strike will fail bc the casinos are failing. I am doubtful there is a whole lot more money to be paid to these employees, unless you strip money from other more profitable properties in the casino companies’ portfolios. But that’s not going to happen, they’d sooner shutter the casinos than allow the infection that is AC to spread to healthier parts of the empire.

Or we could just double down and put more money into AC like we did for Xanadu. That mall is going to be the best and most advanced mall of the 20th century when it finally opens.

Strikes may tend to work. In the case of Atlantic City though, any success would be fairly short lived.

Not because the union would be killing the goose that laid the golden egg, but because the union would be knocking over with a mild breeze the already deathly ill goose that can no longer lay any kind of eggs.

There are some marked differences in this Macy’s case. It’s only for 4 NYC locations, specifically the flagship Herald Square location. Most of Macy’s employees are not unionized and non-union workers (especially out of NY state) are not getting these benefits. Would it look bad for Macy’s if its flagship store has picket fences outside, sure, but its not a nationwide change and costs minimally for a location that rakes in what a large district would. This is the bigger issue: Macy’s, as poorly as they are doing nationally, are doing well in key stores, Atlantic City is doing poorly in general, and when the strike happens, the casinos will just pull an Aria and close shop. AC will be the next Detroit unless something drastic happens.
