Oddly enough, I found myself in Macy’s this past weekend while I was waiting for my guitar to be repaired at a nearby store and it was jam packed. It was like Christmas levels of busy. I have utterly no idea why. The rest of the mall wasn’t that busy but Macy’s was completely insane.

I did pick up an adorable G clef pin from some Lady Gaga/Elton John line for 20% off so I guess I can’t complain. I think that’s the first thing I’ve bought in a Macy’s in years.

I think it’s kind of ridiculous that they would take back someone’s commission just because a customer returned something. I know there is a tiny chance that this might be abused, like if someone got their friend to buy something so they could get a commission, and then had them return it. But regardless of whether someone returns something because they later realized they didn’t like/use it or whatever, the employee still obviously did an acceptable job of selling it in the first place!

I worked at a Macy’s (and Bloomingdale’s) distribution center for a few months during the peak season and I definitely remember getting a handout during orientation about the evils of unionization. I desperately needed the job at the time, so I sat on my hands, but — it really felt bad.

I’m glad the retail workers are getting unionized, anyway.

Haha I did as well. I had to watch videos about “someone might approach you talking about an *evil* union...” Too bad I was already a “radical” union lover.

Whew! Close call, everyone! If Macy’s had shut down, how would I have gotten into the mall to get to the stores I actually want to go to?!

Back in college, I spent one summer in retail (after 5 years at a McDonalds), working at a department store that was the first thing that reopened in a mall that was being renovated (and while I was there was the *only* thing open). We got plenty of people coming in asking how they got to the rest of the mall. After a while, I kinda enjoyed telling them “you don’t” (but more politely).

I worked there seasonally from this past November to January. A good bit of the computer training was about how unions are bad. There was a cartoon that explained them like a kid’s show would explain why you shouldn't talk to strangers.
