Good luck. I’m from NY and I called the senate an hour ago to bring a pending animal rights bill to the floor for vote, and they were like, “We have hundreds of bills and then adjourn TONIGHT for a six-month recess.”

They recommended to me that if you want to edge the bill being pushed through for vote, email the majority leader, John Flanagan: flanagan@nysenate.gov

I heard on NPR what went down when some asshole in the assembly or senate (of NY) made some comment about abortion being black genocide (he was white and male) and the responses from everyone were some of the best political burns I’ve ever heard. It was amazing. NPR reported that he was red faced from it hahahaha.

Yup. He’s from Staten Island, which is largely white. Some of his colleagues from across the water in Brooklyn tore him a new one. It was glorious.

Didn't the kids channels back in the day have some sort of diversity clause? The channels I had growing up had many shows (Fresh Prince, Sister Sister, That's So Raven, A Different World) that had not-white main characters doing normal-ish (minus being psychic) things.

I could be wrong but it seems TV used to be far more diverse in the 80's and 90's than it is now at a time when the country is far more ethnically diverse. Although I wonder how diverse those shows were behind the scenes. It’s like how in pop music you have a bunch of successful women out front but few behind the scenes.

I’ve been wondering that too - I’m 30, and I remember loads of family programs in the late 80s and 90s that had black characters as the stars, and shows like “Family Matters,” where almost everyone was black, yet it was largely beloved by everyone. I wonder what changed?

If Diane Johnson wants this bill passed, best do it.

This is a horrible idea unless you want everyone to assume that you were hired for a tax credit and not because you are good at your job.

I don’t think people will care why they have a job. People often get jobs not because they’re the best but because of networking and knowing the right people. That gives white men an advantage in the TV and film industries. Minorities often don’t have networks of people that can use their influence to get them jobs.

A white high school drop out is more likely to be employed than a black college graduate. That tends to be because blacks are often the first in their families to graduate from college so they don’t know people who can get them jobs. It just isn’t always the case that people who get jobs are the best fit.

I think most people would rather have a job and that accusation, than not have a job. YOUR scenario occurs when the problem this is addressing doesn’t exist. But in a world where a resume is picked for Jake Smith but the EXACT same resume is tossed for Jamal Smith, over and over and over and over and over, progress is messy but still worth reaching for.

I would be so curious to see how this works out if it passes, if these kinds of tax credit incentives actually work.

No idea if they work w/r/t diversity, but tax credits are a huge deal in the TV industry and absolutely drive which city production and post-production happens in. They most definitely work.

Does not doing it work? Clearly no. So let’s try.

This is a very good start, especially with regards to writers, but it should really go further. Below the line positions are very important and still very much dominated by white dudes like me. Directors don’t just start out as directors, they work their way up through other departments.
