    The videotaped sermon by Pastor Roger Jimenez of Verity Baptist Church touched off a firestorm of controversy shortly after it was posted on Sunday. In it, Jimenez said that when he learned the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history had occurred at a gay club, he wasn’t sad. In fact, he felt quite the contrary.

    “I think Orlando, Fla., is a little safer tonight,” he told his congregation, equating members of the LGBT community to sexual predators. “The tragedy is more of them didn’t die…. I’m kind of upset he didn’t finish the job!”

    Jimenez also said if it were up to him, gays and lesbians would be lined up against a wall so a firing squad could “blow their brains out.”

    It’s just so odd that Americans feel more comfortable these days “telling it like it is” when it comes to their noxious bigotry. I wonder why that is.

      We have definitely regressed. I keep trying to hold out hope that this year is just a speed bump as we progress along. There’s definitely more of a backlash against the hate speech than there are people spouting the hate, which is a good sign.

      It’s depressing as shit when you hear that kind of rhetoric coming from younger people, though. When it comes from old folks... I mean, it’s still disgusting, but you can kind of at least understand where it came from. When somebody under 50 or so spouts that shit? That’s where my optimism is tested. I clicked the link you posted expecting to find a picture of a crusty old pastor, with beliefs stuck in the 1950s or something. But he looks young. Maybe 40? Ugh. Again: fuck that dude.

        Rice was arrested and charged with attempted assault, aggravated harassment, making a terrorist threat and menacing as a hate crime. He is being held at Rikers, with bail set at $10,000. He’s due back in court on June 17.

        Good. Not a lot of people I wish see sent to Rikers before trial, but I think we just found one.
