Most Americans want Government to provide national defense, police protection and highways. After that, how much government do we want?

Um, after reading your asinine opinions I definitely think we should be spending more on education as well...

I agree with her...I don’t want the food that I eat regulated, put what ever you want in it, as long as you make the most money you can. I don’t want regulations on the water I drink, it should flow to my kitchen directly from whatever source with all the bacteria, feces, urine or whatever, totally organic. I certainly don’t want hazardous materials regulated, I mean, I know they’re hazardous, isn’t that enough? I don’t want the automobile I drive regulated, it should be the build using the cheapest material, with only the minimum amount of materials to make it an automobile. I don’t want any regulation that may make the air I breath cleaner, because that costs money, and I want my corporations to make the most amount of money even if it’s at the expense of mine and others health.

That one made me furious. All of her examples (presumably demonstrating how taxpayer money is “wasted”) were based on education and academic research, with no actual details on what they are.

For anyone interested, the PA grant for “Race to the Top” is a four year program, running in 50 communities, to help prepare at risk kids for elementary school. That’s a $250,000 per city, per year. Not a lot, but an exceptionally necessary program, and from what I’ve heard, an effective one.

Honestly, this is NOTHING compared to what happens at some private companies. These are benign and barely take a political stand one way or the other.

One of my previous employers used to include a two-page screed about how the Democrats were driving up health care costs every time they distributed our yearly plan updates. Same boss had a disclaimer about how sexual harassment/disability/maternity leave laws were bullshit (paraphrasing) IN the employee handbook and forms. And he frequently brought in guest speakers who were all local Republican officials to help “educate” us on the issues before elections — these meetings were mandatory.

    This wasn’t a billion-dollar company, but it wasn’t a mom-and-pop shop either. Had a couple hundred employees.

When I applied for a job at GFS (Gordon Food Service) in high school, I distinctly remember the final line of the application saying something like: “And by signing the above document, I accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.”

I got a job in construction instead.

I worked for an even smaller company like that years ago. Was the boss of your company the founder/owner? It was like that at this place. He took the attitude that since he had built the company from nothing and made it a success (true), the government had no right to tell him to do anything. We didn’t even benefit from half-assed graphics as in this post; we would just regularly get group-all screeds about this and that conservative talking point. The employee handbook was like yours, and worse. I can’t imagine he ever had a lawyer go over it, because it would have been lawsuit gold if they ever got sued. And this was during Clinton’s second term. I can’t imagine what the place has been like under Obama.

So tired of these Gawker losers and other libtards criticising God fearing white Americans. What have you done for the homeless HamNo, besides “draw attention to the issue” and “advocate for change”? The ulines are doing their part. 98% of homeless on the streets of the US use U-line boxes for their homes. In fact, with those luxurious boxes it is not even appropriate to call these folks “homeless.” They are merely residents of U-line.

“So what’s the answer? I don’t know for sure.”

I’m mean, we can’t hunt them for sport... can we? We’d love to hear your thoughts...

Seriously, that whole passage is the most loathsome piece of shit I’d read in a long time. She sets up the entire frightening scenario of the homeless - drug-addled, insane threatening people that keep you from eating veal piccata or seeing the local theater version of Jersey Boys.

      “So what’s the answer?”

How about trying to find out if some of them would like a job, you dumb...

When I was doing eBay retailing, I stopped using Uline when I actually took the time to do a little bit of research and found out that I could get all of my packing materials from other sources for much less. It meant I couldn’t get conveniently get them all at once from one company, but that’s pretty much the only thing I lost. This makes me even happier that I stopped giving my money to them.

What kind of shipping supplies? Been looking for somewhere to get LP mailers & things like that, that isn’t Uline. They get points for having free overnight shipping but man oh man is it hard to reconcile that with the politics.

She writes about attending a Michael McDonald show, apparently without the requisite dose of shame and regret that a normal person would incur from sharing such a sordid tale. She is a monster.

The answer to homelessness, Liz, is pretty straightforward: give them a home. Just ask SLC, for example. “Poor people make me uncomfortable” is not an answer.

This treats none of the underlying causes though. Not saying it's a bad idea, but still

The idea is you treat the underlying causes once you’ve given them some sort of foundation. None of this “teach the homeless to code” crap, or actually sensible job programs, or mental illness treatment, will have much effect if the person is constantly in and out of shelters.

Like I said about the other blockhead at Menard’s who insists on bombarding his employees with right-wing propaganda, I bet the average Uline employee who receives this crap is far more likely to recoil from the ideas being rained down from the executive suite than to be swayed by them.

Hot tip to executives everywhere: the attitude of the majority of the people who work for your company toward you all is “fuck upper management.” I can hear the Uline employees now, as they open their pay envelope and see this rubbish: “While I’m out here working, those moron executives are jerking off, making this kind of crap! Buncha assholes.”

Exactly. The only people this actually works on is thirsty striving middle management. It’s basically Orwell’s concept of the inner and outer party. The Proles really couldn’t give a shit...they’re too busy just staying alive to fucking care.

    I gotta stop using Uline.

I remember the owners of my company sending out ‘Don’t Vote For Obama’ letters before the ‘08 election. They thought he was going to raise the capital gains tax back to where it was before Bush lowered it and so they were scared they’d be taxed more. Turns out he’s really a corporatist and didn’t do that at all!

Capital gains rates did go up, just not to pre-W levels. Also Cap. gains are subject to NIIT, so that’s a little boost above the marginal rates.
