Yo, Nick, just do me a favor. Sit down somewhere and stop trying so hard. Like, we get it. You’re having sex. You’re an adult now. But believe me when I tell you that being a full-grown adult male is about far, far more than how often you get your dick wet.

Which is another huge problem with purity pledges. It can setup a sex = grown-up dynamic.

And also, because there are so many constant tweaks going on about what makes a man a man, constantly having sex feels like one of those things that remains proof of your manly bonafides.

I’m glad he’s getting out there. That was one of the creepier things about late 1990s/early 2000s pop music, the whole “public virginity pledge”. Remember when Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Bros, Jessica Simpson, and Britney Spears did them?

It’s really creepy and doesn’t encourage responsible decision making. Plus, almost everyone ends up looking like a hypocrite. Or rushing into an ill advised marriage like Jessica Simpson.

And for the girls, it sets them up so that the public feels even more entitled to police and shame them for their sexual choices and modesty choices throughout their teens and 20's than they would be if they hadn't started out as young teens on kids' networks talking about how chaste they were going to be.

I wonder how his parents feel about him being so overtly sexual, as it’s my understanding it was the parents idea to do the whole purity pledge thing. And the oldest Jonas brother definitely did save it for marriage. God, so glad that phase is over and all those little tween celebrities who were holding out are just so clearly banging now (see Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, etc etc).

I wonder how much was the parent’s beliefs and how much was marketing. And the oldest one married while they were still a thing right?

Plus, youngest children get away with murder.

In one of the various links above – or perhaps a link-within-a-link – he explicitly states that when he was 15, “someone” at his church (of which his dad was the pastor) “got this idea” that all the kids in the youth group should pledge celibacy and wear rings, and the kids all agreed; he says that none of them really knew what they were “stepping into.” He also talks about how growing up as a PK meant that even before the rings and the publicity, he lived under public scrutiny of his “image” and ostensible virtue.

Not only is he trying too hard, he isn’t even interesting. A young famous dude having sex isn’t exactly shocking.

a more scientific comparison (still not scientific at all, but you know) might be to look at the number of google hits for “zayn malik sex interview” compared to the number of hits for just “zayn malik”, and make a similar comparison for jonas. thus:

    zayn malik: ~27,700,000 hits
zayn malik sex interview: ~688,000 hits
1 sex interview hit per 40 mentions

    nick jonas: ~164,000,000 hits
nick jonas sex interview: ~911,000 hits
1 sex interview hit per 180 mentions

I really don’t know if I see this as a deliberate attempt to be scandalous or provocatively candid, so much as the result of having been raised in a sexually oppressed manner.

I went to religious school my entire life (until university) and 90% (no joke or hyperbole) of the staunchest abstinence advocate/purity ringers eventually went ‘sex crazy’. Repressive households and public persona, especially during puberty, will do some weird shit to you when you get out.
