It’s a shame, you know? This judge had such a bright judiciary career in front of him, it is just a shame that this one little verdict will mess up his entire future.

you have to take the whole picture in terms of what impact imprisonment has on a specific individual’s life.

Okay. So, I missed that part. And now I am trying very hard to breathe.

Apologising for my ignorance, here, but which part of the penal code states that one must take a specific individual’s life impact into consideration when handing down a judgement? And then, are we suggesting that an indigent Latino defendant from East Palo Alto should be sentenced more harshly for the same crime because his life was tougher to begin with, and thus he can, somehow, handle it?

Isn’t it supposed to be the opposite: that childhood trauma might be a motivating impact in crime, and thus reason for greater leniency (or, in the very least, some compassion)?

Nothing about the trial’s procedure has shocked me as much as that one sentence.

As a man, the judge probably has a family to support, so we should take the whole picture into consideration, and probably cut him some slack. And pay him more.

Obviously if you are poor and not white your life already sucks and prison won’t affect you that much anyway.

Those aren’t his exact words but I feel like that’s what he meant. He literally wants to give some people privilege because they already have privilege.

This is really important, but I can’t move past this:

a case involving a woman who was allegedly sexually assaulted while under anesthesia

    I feel genuinely sick., guys.

Not going to lie I was so scared of the dentist for the longest time because I heard stories of women being sexual assaulted while being under anesthesia by dentists. SO I THOUGHT, as a young child, that ALL dentists were terrible child rapists out to get me. I was a very troubled youth.

Truth. I currently have at least 2 people in my friends circle of ages 40+ who haven't been to the dentist in 20 years because they were assaulted under anesthesia. They are less afraid that their teeth will fall out of their heads than of being assaulted again

Is there any reason why you aren’t running the judge’s photo rather than Brock’s (whose mug makes me retch at this point)? Is it a matter of privacy/safety or what?

JE, may I ask what the E stands for? It’s driving me crazy. Elliot, Elizabeth, Edsel, Evangaline, Eva, Ezeqiel, Ellaine, Ezra, Elsa?

I almost don’t want you to tell me (of course, you don’t have to) because I’ve been having fun trying to guess for weeks now.

If a judge needs to be removed from certain cases because of bias that judge needs to be de-benched.

I think it’s probable most of his constituents and bosses want to do that, but he is in an elected position. Doesn’t mean it can’t happen, just that it’s harder (I don’t think anyone even ran against him in the last election). I hate the elected judge system.

In case anyone is interested, there’s a White House petition about this judge online right now. Not that the President would really be able to do anything about him, but after it reaches 200,000 signatures the administration would have to publicly address it.

Just a reminder that this whole thing would very likely have gone unnoticed if the woman in question hadn’t been such a terrific, talented writer and if she hadn’t had the bravery and determination to write such a long, damning piece of prose AND share it with Buzzfeed. This judge would still be judging away, unjudged, without her. I have all the more respect for her; I hope it helps her to feel she took some control of this hideous situation.
