I’m not trolling, this is a serious question: how many people here have shot a gun? Pistol? Semi-automatic?

Grew up around all sorts of firearms. Handguns, semi-automatic and bolt action rifles, shotguns both pump and semi-automatic. Used for hunting and range practice. - Rural Canadian

My husband and I go to the shooting range, I’ve shot a bunch of different handguns and some small hunting rifles. I’m about as liberal as they come and live in Massachusetts but shooting is a decent (albeit expensive) hobby in a controlled environment.

What is the point of this? Is this surprising? Gun sellers are ultimately salespeople.....they are trying to sell you stuff.

Yeah, a good investigation would be to have a person with a criminal record that would preclude them from owning a gun, try to buy a gun. This is basically an article that explains, no shit, you can buy guns at a gun store if you pass the background check.

“No need for a concealed carry permit.”

Because you can’t concealed carry a large rifle.

I was confused by that line too. I get the point she’s trying to make, but I don’t understand the relevance a CCP would have to the purchase of a rifle.

My cousin is stockpiling weapons because “Obama is going to take them away!!” She is a suburban white girl who has never been attacked or hurt and owns enough arms to start her own militia. I don't get it....

I have a crazy hoarder uncle who really does think Obama is going to come after his guns. He mainly has hunting rifles and some shotguns. A few years ago, my cousin decided to treat her parents to a trip for their 40th anniversary. He blatantly refused at first, thinking his guns would disappear. Then later agreed if he could store them at my cousin’s house (she lives outside of DC) so Obama would’t know where they were.

So someone who has no legal reason to be denied the purchase a firearm goes into a legally licensed firearms shop and purchased a legal firearm after passing the background check. That’s the way the system is supposed to work.

Send someone in who has a felony conviction on their record and see how easy it is for them to make the same purchase.

You can’t start denying people their legal right to purchase a legal firearm just because the same model firearm has been used in a crime. That’s like forcing Dodge to stop selling the Charger because it’s the car most often used for drunk driving. (I just named a make/model at random....drop it)

Violence is the problem, not guns. Guns are a tool the violent use. Remove guns and they’ll find another tool. If the Orlando shooter hadn’t gotten a legal gun, he would have gotten an illegal gun. Or made some explosives. And it’s even easier to make explosives than it is to buy a gun legally.

Instead of saying we need to stop gun violence, how about we change that to say we need to stop violence.

What exactly do you think happened in those seven minutes?

FYI: when I volunteered to help out our local public school, I had to go through two background checks, one including fingerprints and it took two weeks for the approval. It took several weeks and a driving test to get my drivers license. Rank these activities in order of likely harm to others: Tutoring grade-schoolers, driving a car, owning and operating an assault rifle.

P.S. The right answer is 3,2,1. And no, I am not arguing for zero background checks for tutors, I am arguing for thorough background checks and training for anyone who owns a firearm. They are tools for killing people. Let’s behave like it.

If the Orlando shooter hadn’t gotten a legal gun, he would have gotten an illegal gun. Or made some explosives. And it’s even easier to make explosives than it is to buy a gun legally.

      • Illegal Guns - A pretty big barrier for an unconnected person. Likely to either get ripped off, or arrested in the attempt.
      • Explosives: sure - not too difficult to make. Far more difficult to make well. Two decently-made bombs exploded in a dense crowd in Boston. Only three people died. Quite hard for regular people to make Iraq-style IEDs, in the US.

Every little bit of challenge makes it less likely the attack gets carried out. Right now, all you need is the will.

After buying the gun, she immediately drove to a police station to turn it in, where she was met with confusion about what she was trying to do. Ultimately, it took longer to hand the weapon over to the police than it did to purchase it.

They were just worried they might not have room for it in the gun rack next to all the assault rifles donated to them by the U.S. military.

Other things that take longer: Finding my keys, waiting for the base coat on my nails to dry, cleaning the toilet, baking one of those cheap frozen pizzas in the red package (Totino’s, I think). Hell, preheating the oven to bake said pizza.

And? She passed the background check, which is what the law requires regardless of the type of gun.
