I think those letters were written pre-sentencing by the parents as a way to get leniency for their child. If I’m wrong, i apologize. But I don’t necessarily know if I’m ok with the idea of demonizing their parents for making sure their kid gets leniency.

If he were my son, I would be embarrassed and write a letter to the court APOLOGIZING for raising someone like him, not crying about how stressed he is because he got caught.

Literally none of the stuff you all have read or discussed re: mass incarceration over the last few years has sunk in I guess.

I know! It’s hated that black men are often in jail too much too long for drug stuff, and that’s understandable, I agree with that... The correction is not to put white men in jail longer though. And this particular man, though despicable I feel is unlikely to reoffend. (Pretty sure he’s hiding in his affluent basement after jail for a long long time). His life is pretty much over why should we pay to have him locked up, and what is the right amount of time? Now if they had asked him to pay money to the victim id be cool with that

That discussion is for the consideration of non-violent offenders. Not for rapists. Is your comment a joke? Am I missing something?

What a thoughtful and well-written response. I’ve said this a lot in conversations with friends, but this juror’s statement is another example of how this was a “good” case - as in, there were eye witnesses, the police did what they should have done, the jury did what they should have done - and yet the punishment still didn't fit the crime. I'm glad the juror also addressed the fact that this case could have been a deterrent to on-campus assault but instead most likely galvanized those who already assumed they wouldn't face consequences for doing similar things.

The jurors did their job. The judge didn’t do his job.

The public mitigated that effect, by making sure that Brock Turner will have a very tough time finding employment and opportunity once he has served his joke sentence of 90 days in county jail. His mugshot and crime will forever be plastered all over the internet whenever someone googles his name.

I really connect with the part about the judge clearly not accepting the jury’s findings. The judge’s whole argument for the sentence was a fallacy.

If he really believed that this kid was guilty of raping an unconcious woman, then either A) The kid is horribly regretful, in which case, he will never be able to forgive himself and his life is likely ruined anyway. Prison is probably the best place for him to spend some time seriously looking at his mistakes and give some thought to the consequences of his actions. The truly repentent do not shy from repentance. If you discovered that you got so fucked up that you did something horrible like that to another person, how do you live with yourself comfortably afterwards?

or B) The kid denies that he did anything wrong, in which case he definitely needs to go to prison for a long time.

So, apart from the fact that this was a ridiculous sentence, it really shows me that despite what the jury decided, this judge did not see this act as the rape of an unconscious woman. He saw this as two drunk people making equal mistakes - and that there was no reason for this kid to suffer long-term consequences for something that he was only half-responsible for.

I wonder what it would have took for him to see how serious this was. One of those heroes cried when talking about the situation, because it traumatized him. There was a 10 second scene like this in Unbreakable and it made me nasueous for a week. Because as horrible as rape is in general, there is something so sick about doing it to someone passed out.

Judge Persky has disrespected the victim, the jury, past, present, and future rape victims, and the law.

If a bunch of future jurors refuse to serve on his cases, that will put a big dent in his judicial career. Let’s keep our fingers crossed! Perhaps some picketers can set up shop outside the courthouse on jury selection days and let the potential pool of jurors know what they are in for....

Is that an option for jurors? I’ve never heard that you can outright refuse to serve based on the judge.

Ugh. I’m going back to bed.

Side note: this judge sucks. He does not believe rape is a serious crime. Fuck him. 6 months is a fucking joke. I’ve got family members who’ve spent a helluva lot longer in prison for non violent crimes.

As the thread above this one is making painfully clear, plenty of people here don't believe rape is a serious offense, either.

I read somewhere yesterday that this POS actually took a picture of the victim’s breasts and send it to a group of friends. The picture itself was not found - maybe it was like a Snapchat thing for groups - but that there was a response from one of his friends saying asking “whose boobs are those” or something like that. I don’t know if this is true but I became even more enraged. Just when I thought I couldn’t any more.

Any reason why the case wasn't remanded back to the jury for sentencing? Is it because they didn't convict him on a first-degree felony (as they were not instructed on which charges were the most serious)?

In my jurisdiction, juries don’t sentence. Judges do.

      I imagine that’s pretty standard.

I believe the jury usually makes a suggestion for sentencing. In this case they recommended 6 years, I think.

I don’t think this guy was really a juror. If he were really in the courtroom for the whole trial, he would have noticed that this guy is white. Totally pale, blond, the whole not-black deal. C’mon, he’s white, so we’re cool, right? White guys doing forcible rape is more like a prank, and other guys it’s more of a danger to society thing. Make sense now?

I don’t know how people get out of high school without their basic race indoctrination. Bad students, I guess. How are we gonna make America great again if we can’t make it really, really racist again.

Only 3% of rapists will spend time in jail. So most black, Hispanic and Asian guys get away with it as well. It's astounding that people are turning this into a race thing after the Jameis Winston debacle.

Yeah but he did wish he was never good at swimming. Plus it was the alcohol that made him rape a woman, clearly swimming, alcohol, peer pressure and many other factors were more to blame for him making a decision to rape an unconscious woman than him. Ugh hopefully he gets shanked
