It’s unbelievable that after countless active shooter cases, someone can shoot their way through a place for nearly an hour while the cops wait outside.

And yes, I totally get why in years past waiting outside and securing the perimeter while opening negotiations was the best possible strategy to minimize casualties. If the objective of the guy with the gun is to have some kind of demand met, then it’s a sound strategy on the part of law enforcement.

However, taking hostages is becoming less and less of a thing. Paris, San Bernardino, Orlando...etc. The mass murderers we’re seeing aren’t interested in talking, just delaying long enough to kill as many people as possible while the cops stand back in case someone gets killed. Meanwhile, everyone gets killed.

I really, really hope that if I’m ever unlucky enough to be in a place targeted by a terrorist that the cops come right the hell in and do their best to put a bullet in the shooter’s skull as soon as humanly possible.

Yes, that’s a great way to catch a cop’s bullet by mistake, but it’s a lot better than spending over 40 minutes locked in a small building with someone intent on putting a bullet in every single person who isn’t them.

Rather than waiting for the cops to save you, a better option is to get good training and get a gun to be your own “first responder”.

It sure beats Hide ‘N Hope.

      Nope

At the entrance, an armed security guard confronted Mateen at 2:02 a.m. Shots were fired, but whatever happened did not stop Mateen. He stormed into the club just as last call was announced over the microphone.

Also, a nightclub at last call is one of the last places I’d want to be around people packing heat.

A friend of mine posted this - not sure how true it is. Haven’t read anything from anyone else that was there.

I’m going to have to call BS on that. If there was any chance there was more than one shooter (even the slightest indication) that would’ve been reported immediately. The media has never been hesitant to “scare” us and often prints content that is more scary than reality.

50 people dead, from one mans machine guns.

And the Republicans in Congress will not do one fucking thing about it.

Trump may be the poster child, but the real power is with Paul Ryan, and he is every bit as heinous and cowardly and weak on this issue as Trump is on anything.

The next one is inevitable, and that's fine with the Republican Party.

It wasnt a machine gun. It doesnt help when people who don’t know what a “machine gun” is talk about gun control.

If my son ever sent me any of these texts I would die, or possibly kill. Like any of these moms If I had a gun and I knew what was happening, I would kick the door in and shoot this insane fucker right in the face. And it sure wouldn’t take me three hours to make up my mind to do it.

Fuck right off, Internet Smarmy Jackass. Her son died, and she was helpless to stop it. Have a little empathy, for Christ’s sake. Better yet, have a kid, and then see how you feel.

    Jesus.

I think this Saudi dude on Twitter summed it all up best (تفجير_اورلاندو is the Arabic hashtag for the Orlando attack):

Shots of the texts in question:

I liked this story about who was bringing food to those waiting in line to donate blood, as well.

      There’s also this:

I’ve seen many condemnations of this crime by Muslims online, as well as this poll with 71% (at the time that I voted, as one of that 71%; I’m not Muslim, but most people who voted are) of respondents being against the attack:

This is the first thing that I’ve read that really drives home the length of time over which this tragedy unfolded. That is so awful and terrifying, and frankly unimaginable.

This is so sad. Every time something like this happens I wonder how you can go on. Where do you find the strength? Where do you find the courage to go out every day knowing you can be cut down like this and that your loved ones may never come home because someone you don’t know and who doesn’t know you, decides you aren’t worthy enough to live?

What do you say to yourself when you go out, do you think about this or do you reason that it isn’t statistically likely and keep going on as usual?

I visit the US less and less and have relatives come over to see me because of these shootings and wonder how you stay so calm despite them?

Very big country. And depending where you live gun violence isn't part of your life. Other parts are a different story.

Here was my first thought as an LA denizen.

There is enough potential violence already possible from:

garden variety citizen on citizen hostility,

      earthquake,

fire, and most importantly, and far more, infinitely more likely:

      car crashes, and/or road rage.

We do a pretty good job of terrorizing ourselves actually.

That made me feel nauseated, reading that. And imagining exchanging those texts with my daughter made me want to wake her up just to hold her and tell her I love her.
