We have a terrible history in the US, of allowing domestic abusers to own guns.

Where I’m from, that’s pretty much the only thing that keeps you from owning a gun legally, that and a felony.

If it's obtained illegally, then, well, nothing you can do about that.

This comment was in the context of him being an Islamist, not that beating her was normal. You know that.

She meant that he was normal, married her, became NOT normal shortly afterwards, then after realizing what she had done, moved out and divorced him.

Sounds like that whole good guy with a gun thing isn’t really working out as put out by the NRA and gun nutz. Per the LA Times:

“Officials said that the gunman initially traded gunfire with an Orlando police officer who was working as a security guard at the club. The gunman retreated into the club and held hostages there for about three hours.”

Isn’t mass shooting an extreme form of narcism? It is the ultimate “look at me”.

Enter into a marriage where some ancient book of laws is the guiding principle then don’t be surprised when ancient behavior becomes a dominant factor in the relationship. (Avoid all dogmatic people for they are “vexations to the spirit”)

Past the point of giving a shit about motives, because knowing *why* he did it doesn’t give any solace to the 50 dead.

But, how, how, HOW IN THE FUCK, did a man who was investigated by the FBI for his alleged ties to extremism, become licensed by the state of Florida to own and carry a gun?

If being on a fucking watchlist can’t keep you from getting a gun, then what, pray tell, fucking can?

The GOP blocked a measure that would prevent people who are on the terrorist watch list from purchasing guns. And that was just the one proposed after San Bernardino. They’ve been blocking similar measures since the George W. administration.

Thank your Republican senator for the fact that this maniac was able to acquire guns. The GOP has been blocking measures to prevent people on the terrorist watchlist from getting guns since the W. administration:

Senate Republicans rejected a bill that aims to stop suspected terrorists from legally buying guns, on Thursday. The vote came a day after at least 14 people were killed during the San Bernardino massacre in California by two suspects, including a woman said to have pledged allegiance to ISIS.

And you can thank your local Republican congressperson for the fact that people with domestic violence convictions can still acquire weapons in your state:

“This is a great day for anyone who beats up their spouses and children and can now rest assured that the Virginia legislature is protecting their right to remain armed and dangerous,” said Lori Haas, Virginia State Director for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) and Virginians for Responsible Gun Laws (VRGL).

But there are no real differences between the parties, right?

I get that many people are dumb and respond to being asked to reconcile two opposing thoughts by becoming angry and dismissive, but man, how can you not be confused to the point of head pain by your politician(s) [that is, the ones you voted for/support] being “against terror” and against preventing people we suspect to be terrorists from buying weapons?

It is bizarre that Republicans still have the reputation as the party that’s strongest on national security. It’s been clear for decades that Republicans are quick to sell out Americans’ safety for political or monetary gain.

For all the Christian apologists out there:

      Proverbs 20:30
Blows and wounds cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being.

      Leviticus 20:13
If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

I think we should stop claiming one religion is better than another and just recognize they’re all terrible.

I’m with you on that: not too long ago, on the blog about the young woman who looked like Ted Cruz, who had agreed to be paid for porn, someone (sorry I can’t recall who) commented “There’s a lot to unpack here.” That’s kind of where I am with this supremely horrible story:

US-born citizen with legally purchased firearm(s), reportedly a spouse abuser, reportedly not particularly devout as a Muslim but also someone reported to have expressed support for ISIS, reportedly someone who was offended / disgusted by the sight of two men kissing a few months back in Miami, opens up deadly mayhem on a gay nightclub on “Latino night” in Orlando, FL. Result: deadliest mass shooting in US History (that’s saying quite a bit). And yes, an assault rifle was used and there were at least plenty of early reports about explosives, so we get to have round 643 about mental health, access to weapons, religious extremism, LGBT hate, home-grown terrorism, “radicalization,” the list goes on and on. It’s like a final exam question for everything that sucks right now.

I don’t know if anyone will ever understand all the “why” and frankly that’s not the part that’s getting me nauseous and heartsick right now. I’m sad as hell for those killed and wounded and their loved ones. I just want it to stop, now. But at this point I can’t get any kind of horizon-level view of this heinous act there’s just too much input.
