I’m very sorry for everybody who works at all the Gawker Media properties; I’ve worked with a few of you in my day job, and you’ve always been a delight.

Whatever people think about Gawker’s editorial policy (and I smell a lot of virtue signalling around it: Gawker is BAD, therefore I’m GOOD), this stinks. This is no way for someone to treat the free press - and next time someone like Thiel decides they want to shut down a news outlet they don’t like, they’ll have precedent and pattern and process to follow.

Best of luck to all of you. I hope the changes which will follow this won’t be too difficult for the people working at Gawker Media, the vast majority of whom had probably never heard of Peter Thiel before all this.

  Or someone make kiddie sex tape jokes at trial.
  And the Conde Nast outing was disgusting.
  They are at least complicit in their demise.

This bothers me. I have read some of the miles of discussion here, including valid points about the journalist worthiness of sex tapes and whether it’s fair to out a billionaire with backwards social views or not.

Bottom line is that no one benefits from validating one entitled rich man’s decision to destroy a business for publishing truths he found personally distasteful or insulting.

His ability to spend $10 million using the legal system as a club should not decide whether Gawker or any other outlet exists. His money does not grant legitimacy, nor should it confer this kind of power.

It is an uglier world where billionaire vendettas determine who can speak than one in which tasteless things are sometimes published online.

  The fact that Peter Thiel financed Hulk Hogan’s lawsuit has no relationship to whether the claims made in that lawsuit were valid. You and every single Gawker editor seem to misunderstand this, which boggles the mind. Liberals (and I am one) harp constantly about access to justice. Yet you seem to believe that having someone finance a lawsuit renders the lawsuit illegitimate and unjust. I would argue that permitting third party financing of lawsuits actually makes the world a better place.

Executives at Gawker Media told employees today that the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy ~~due to Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel’s third-party funding of several lawsuits against the company~~ due to our puerile habit of posting indefensible sleazy content that has garnered multiple meritorious lawsuits.

Fixed that for you. It doesn’t matter if Satan and the zombie corpse of Adolph Hitler are pooling their funds to bankroll these lawsuits, they wouldn’t be going anywhere if they didn’t have merit. As usual you’re desperate to blame everyone but yourselves for these entirely self-inflicted wounds.
