I truly appreciate and value Lin Manuel’s talent, but if he’s at all dissillusioned into thinking his show is at all reachable to anyone but the rich, white audience, he’s sorely got his head up his ass. My roommate managed to get orchestra seats at $300/each a couple of months ago, and she told me the people around her - all rich, white old people - did not know what the show was about or walk out enlightened in any way. They bought tickets because it was the “it” show to get in to and they walked out shrugging their shoulders. Art should be accessible to the general public at any level at a fair price. $800 is not it.

Why do you think he may think that? From the quote in the article he seems like he is trying to run a business/make money:

“What has certainly been frustrating to me, as a business owner, is to see that my product is being resold at many times its face value and my team isn’t sharing in those profits,” the lead producer of “Hamilton”... It’s not fair.”

“How did I get to $849? By continually monitoring the secondary market and finding out where the average is... If I’m at $849, I think we may succeed in taking the motivation out of the scalpers to buy those tickets.”

I think he would be quite happy that his show is one of the most popular Broadway productions of all times. I’m just going to guess.

I would totally be okay with them recording it for PBS or something with the original cast and then seeing it with a different cast at the Kennedy Center when it goes on tour.

    But just please, record it!

Unfortunately, this is what Miranda says about airing a recording:

The thing is, we worked really hard to make this work as a piece of theater. And I get it - I get it 50 times a day: “Please film it! Please film it so we can watch it!” And I understand it’s hard to get to New York and it’s hard to get a Broadway ticket. At the same time, filming is an act of translation. It is not being in the room with us. It’s different. You will get the forest, you will not get the trees.

But then there’s also the 360 degree video CBS posted on their FB page of the cast singing “Wait for It”, so you can have crumbs.

More than 10,000 people enter the lottery for these tickets every day.

I am suddenly taking my losses less personally. I’m still taking them personally, because the Universe owes me a premium Hamilton ticket, because my heart is the purest (#therealCharlieBuckett), but less personally than I did a few minutes ago.

I don’t believe it. I think it’s a conspiracy to keep me from seeing the show so I have to keep using spotify to listen to the album.

I have tickets on July 2 and could probably fund a Disney vacation for 2 by reselling them, but eff that. I’m going to bask in the aura of Leslie Odom Jr.’s Burr, see Daveed in all his Jeffersonian glory, and cry buckets during the final song. #notthrowingawaymyshot

Have fun. I finally listened to the soundtrack and not only is it great, but it made me think. That’s what sold me. I love history so much, and this just excited my heart more. Also, I’m hoping to score tickets when the touring production hits LA, but I’m sure I’d have to do things that would make Jesus cry to see that become a reality. lol.

I honestly do not understand the people who feel personally victimized by these ticket prices.

    1) This is how free markets work, y’all. Welcome to America. You know who fucking loved free markets? Alexander Hamilton.

    2) The production team makes damn sure that non-wealthy people have an opportunity to see the show. There’s a lottery for $10 tickets, and they’re doubling the number of tickets available. They have entire shows for high school students where the kids only pay $10 a ticket. They put on FREE shows every Wednesday in front of the theatre with members of the cast and other cool Broadway performers. With the popularity of the show, they don’t have to do any of this, but they do because they’re decent people who feel that theatre is for everyone.

    3) You will be able to see this show eventually. It will run for a very long time. The hype will die down and tickets will get more affordable. It will go on tour with cheaper tickets in larger houses. You might not be able to see it with the original cast, but you will be able to see Hamilton.

Also, Hamilton profit-shares with much of the original cast, so they can have all the money they can get as far as I’m concerned.

I’ll just have to wait until this becomes a movie, I guess. It won’t be the same but there’s literally no way I’d ever have that kind of money for a date night.

Contrary to why NYC residents might think, the vast majority of Americans have exactly zero options to enjoy live theater this way. Movies have far surpassed theater in cultural relevance. It might not be the same but that’s ok. It’s like having the ‘best camera’ - the ‘best’ camera is the one you have when you want to take the picture.

I go and see local plays when it’s in my budget - a movie just isn’t the same sometimes. A movie really would be rad though so everyone could see it. $1 at the redbox should be doable for most people.

Things I would rather do with 900 dollars than see Hamilton, ranked: 1. Burn 900 dollars 2. 5 day all inclusive stay in Sri Lanka including flight. ( wife and I have done this for 890 dollars total) 3. Order 900 double cheeseburgers. 4. Attend 30 Baltimore Orioles games. 5. Flush the money down the toilet. 6. Voluntarily give up my health insurance, get bit by a rattlesnake, hallucinate in the desert for two days and pay for the anti-venom out of my own pocket, plus get into 30,000 thousand dollar debt for the price of the helicopter lift out of the desert. 7. Watch Avenue Q 18 times. 8. Order the movie “Crash” 350 times on pay per view and spend the entire time vomiting due to its general shittiness. 9. Purposefully poison myself with cyanide and have my body cremated. 10. All of the above.

I’m not surprised. For the DC tour dates in 2017-2018, they’re going to give people with season tickets dibs and then release whatever’s left to everybody who can’t afford season tickets to the Kennedy Center.

At this point, I pretty much figure I’ll see a non-union version in 2025 or something.

I have a friend who bought a subscription this year so that she'd get first dibs for the following year with the Hamilton tour.

Yeah, I think they had some weird clause that you have to have season tickets for both 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 because they don’t know which season the show will fall during. So you don’t have to just be able to afford season tickets to the Kennedy center: You have to be able to afford season tickets to the Kennedy center twice. (Four times, if you plan to take a friend to the show. )

A weekend in New York might actually be the cheaper option.

There’s a weird tension in a production with such populist flair being available in its entirety (that is, not just the soundtrack) only in one of the most exclusive forms of media.

Without knowing anything about contractual/rights barriers, I’m a little surprised they haven’t done a movie theater simulcast. It’d be a great way to give millions of people a chance to see it who otherwise would have no chance — not to mention a great way to make $30 million dollars in one weekend.

Those movie theatre showings, like the National Theatre Live broadcasts, are usually done when the show has closed. That way their ticket sales aren’t undermined. With the long engagement in Chicago starting in the fall and the national touring launching in California next year, there’s no way in hell they’re going to put it in theatres.
